Very, very, frustrating, trying to get FAH going.

Post by CCAK77 »

I haven't done any F@H since back during the PS3 days. I recently bought a new laptop, and have lots of idle time where I'm not using it, and came across a post tonight talking about F@H so I decided to try it again. Apparently, I wasn't planning on sleeping tonight.

Anyway, can't seem to get it going. I tried out the browser-based folding client, just to see what that was about because that's new, then I installed the desktop client. The browser-based client caused my computer to freeze after hitting 100% utilization. So I lowered my OC settings after restarting. Ran the browser F@H again, and it completed a work unit, and was able to peg all my cores at 100%, no crashing and a successful work unit.

I tried to run the desktop client, and it just refuses to work. The client acts like it might want to work, but then it just gets stuck on some sort of FAHcore update... Here's my log.

I'm also going to post a few screenshots to show what else is going on. The FAH Advanced Control Client frequently greys out, and is unresponsive (with highlighted "updating"). The web client often says it's disconnected, and restarting everything over again and reloading the browser page does nothing to help.

Code: Select all

What my browser control panel looks like when it's connected: http://i.imgur.com/sfCORwy.jpg
What my 3d visualization looks like: http://i.imgur.com/IjjE4kA.png
Edit: had to code my URLs.

In case it's relevant: Laptop specs, Alienware 17r4 (2016), 4K Display, i7-6820HK OC 4.0GHz, 16GB 2667MHz DDR4 RAM, GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 VRAM (Driver ver. 378.49), Win10 Pro (ver. 1607, Build 14393.693), FAH 7.4.4 is installed on my SSD, internet is working fine for everything else, and FAH is not restricted by the Firewall. If I can provide any other helpful info, please feel free to ask.

Please help, I'm at my wits end. :e?: :e(

Welcome to the folding support forum.

The messages "Failed to read stream" usually indicate that the connection is being blocked. A common cause id anti-virus or other anti-malware software blocking data downloads using http by other than "known" browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or the like. The FAHClient process needs the same http/https access as any browser, so that might need to be configured.

One way to test to see if this is the issue is to try one or more of the links shown in the log using a browser. For example, if you went to http://fahwebx.stanford.edu/cores/Win32 ... ore_a4.fah in your browser and successfully downloaded the file Core_a4.fah that would indicate that downloads by FAHClient are being blocked. Usually this blocking is local to the system folding is being run on, but occasionally it is done by a router or other external firewall device or rarely by an ISP.

I have my laptop in the DMZ, so no hardware firewall, no software firewall, and no ISP block. I was able to go to the link and download the Core_a4,fah file via Chrome/Edge/Opera/firefox, etc... But I still cannot figure out why FAH client won't connect? I've spent hours at this point, trying to nail down the issue. No other app (including BOINC) has any trouble at all connecting to anything. Reinstalled everything. No AV, no anti-malware, system is clean, no winsock or browser hacks, no rootkits, no hijinks going on.

I'm completely at a loss. I even tried installing the 7.4.16 beta, but still it wouldn't connect.

I am going to point out what I see, but I am just a user like you, not official.

You have a GPU, so the Software lowers the number of CPUs by one, sadly 7 is Prime and F@H does not like large prime numbers. If you lower it to 6, the CPUs will fold.

You have a new Nvidia GPU, but sadly the driver that ships with them does not fold. You can drop back to a 373.06 driver or download a new driver above 376.48 and the GPU will fold.

Nobody here is "official" ... we're all volunteers.

@JimboPalmer: He doesn't have a supported GPU, but the power slider is set to medium so that gives him seven.
(You gave him the right answer but the wrong reason for it.)

@CCAK77: If you want less that 100% you would expect that moving the slider from FULL to MEDIUM would work, and on some systems it does. If you're running the desktop client v7.4.16, I'm surprised it didn't work. The desktop client also gives you many more options not provided by the slider. Please post the log associated with that client.

@bruce He has a gtx 1070, definitely supported but until he gets his connection problem fixed and gets a current gpus.txt the client wont see it.

@CCAK77 are you absolutely sure the windows firewall and related(I don't have a win 10 computer not sure what all it has built in) is turned off, something most likely on your computer seems to be blocking the client.

@Rel25917: True. I missed seeing that GPU because I was looking in the wrong place....and it won't be recognized by FAH until GPUs.txt downloads.

@CCAK77: Are you connecting through you home internet connection or through a business? Many businesses configure a proxy and if you're using one, your browser will get through but not FAH until you configure it to use that proxy server.
