WU fails repeatedly - FAHclient needs to be reinstalled

Post by foldinghomealone2 »

Hi there,

Since I exchanged my GPU from a 1070 to a 1080 TI, I'm not able to fold properly anymore.
(edit: Before I started folding with the 1080 TI, I updated to new drivers and reinstalled the FAHclient.)

As soon as a WU fails, it downloads a new WU but it directly fails again which leads to a new WU and a new fail and so on...
Same happens when I restart the computer during folding a WU and when I start folding again after reboot, the WU fails and so on...

I tried rebooting and different NV drivers (382.53; 384.94), even the beta client (which doesn't work because GUI shows only crap).
The only thing that works is to reinstall the FAHclient. After I set it up again it starts folding properly again. But when a WU fails the problem starts over and I need to reinstall the client.

This happens when the GPU is OCed and non-OCed.

System specs:
Win10, i5-6600k, Aorus 1080 TI, extreme edition, FAHclient 7.4.4, Slider on Full
Here's an example: Folding started, then rebooted mid-folding, restart folding, fails...
(I didn't set up username, team, passkey, as it doesn't change anything)

Re: WU fails repeatedly - FAHclient needs to be reinstalled

Post by bruce »

When drivers are installed for one GPU (say a 1070) they have to be reinstalled when another GPU (say a 1080 Ti) is installed, whether or not the 1070 is removed. In most cases like that, the FAHClient has to be reinstalled, too, though there are some exceptions. It never hurts to reinstall, FAH, though, except you'll almost always lose any partial WU that wasn't completed with the old GPu

I understand that. But that's not the problem.

I reinstalled FAHclient many times in the last few days, because as I described, once a WU fails the client is never is able to start a new WU.
Only after I install the FAHclient again it works.

So your real question is: Why does it say Slot ID 0 no longer exists and there are no other matching slots

How are you starting FAHClient?

Normally, the installation creates a shortcut with which FAH can be started. That shortcut contains a definition to where config.xml is found. If you start FAHClient by some other method (such as doubleclicking the .exe file) that path may not be properly defined so your settings need to be reconfigured.

You didn't post FAH's log, so I can't tell if you're running Windows or Linux. Assuming
1) You're running Windows 10
2) You did not install it to start automatically ... rather you're starting it manually
3) You did installed to run "Just for me"
4) You accepted the other installation defaults
take a look at Win10's list of apps. Inside of the FAHClient group, you'll find 6 shortcuts. Use the one called "Folding@home"

FAH should be placing its config and the working files in the directory that can be accessed with the shortcut called "Data directory" but you shouldn't need to access them that way. Always use "FAHControl" to make changes as you appear to be doing.

If my assumptions are wrong, please correct me.

One of us is talking Chinese, I guess... ;-)

I posted my system specs, saying I'm using win10. And I posted my log files. Please see first post.

The question is not "Slot ID 0 no longer exists and there are no other matching slots".
There is one GPU slot after installation which is fine.
It starts folding after I press 'Fold' which is also fine. But if a WU fails, then it downloads the next WU which fails immediately and downloads the next one which fails immediately again. And so on...
I uploaded a screenshot from Afterburner. Each spike shows a dowloaded and failed WU.
http://imgur.com/a/ecm62

I uploaded a screenshot of my slot options also which are quite defaulty:

I start FAHclient on autostart. Normally I open FAHclient by right-clicking on the icon in the system tray and click on Advanced Control

Edit: after installation there are two slots available. One CPU, one GPU.
Directly after installation I delete the CPU slot because I want to fold with GPU only.

You can set the CPU slot to 'pause-on-start'=true and it won't fold unless you tell it to.

The error is '0x21:ERROR:exception: Error initializing context: clCreateContext (999)' - not one I remember seeing before.
Two things could be happening - permissions or security software interfering with the client writing to the data directory (maybe it can't initialise and write the opening WU log file)
Alternatively, do you have intel openCl CPU drivers installed - is the client attempting to fire up core21 on the CPU / iGPU after a restart? Does the system info tab list any other devices?
Sorry, the above are only guesses but might provide some direction.

How would that help? I don't care about the CPU slot as I want to fold with GPU only. --> Therefore I deleted the CPU slot

Is it possible to concentrate on the real problem that once a WU fails, folding works only after reinstallation of the client again?

Thank you for your hints.

I didn't think about antivirus SW because after a new installation of the client it starts folding properly. Only once a WU fails the client won't fold any other WU anymore. But it might be worth a try.

I don't know if I have installed Intel OpenCL-CPU drivers. There is no CPU slot available

I wouldn't help you but it would help FAH. Every time you reinstall, the CPU slot is recreated and a new WU is downloaded ... and then dumped. You should avoid dumping WUs whenever you can.

The best theory we have today is that the reboot causes OpenCL for Intel (or whatever) to be started rather than OpenCL for your GPU. When you reinstall the drivers, OpenCL for NVidia is enabled, but that doesn't remove OpenCL for Intel and rebooting may make it the primary API entry for OpenCL.

Another thing you might try is to install the 7.4.16 beta client. There have been several changes that allows it to manage GPUs from multiple vendors. It may be better at compartmentalizing the Intel iGPU and keep it separate from the NVidia GPU.
That's one reason I suggested FAHBench. When multiple GPUs are configured, it shows them and allows you to select which one you want to test. Again, the released FAHClient 7.4.4 isn't as good as later versions.

Personally, I did improve the functionality of this machine by removing the OpenCL drivers for Intel.

Does FAHBench allow you to fold on your Intel HD 5x0 iGPU?

Previously I tried 7.4.16 but the GUI shows only crap. See screenshot.

After you suggested it, I tried again with 7.4.16 (same problems with GUI) but I was able to start a WU. Once I rebooted, it failed again.

When I use the 1080 TI as my 'main' graphic card (I mean that the monitor is plugged to the 1080 TI) then I can't choose the iGPU in FAHBench.
When I use the iGPU as 'main' graphic card, then I can choose the iGPU in FAHBench and it is able to successfully run it (Score 6.9xxx)

How can I uninstall the intel OpenCL drivers? I googled but couldn't find anythin helpful.

PS. Antivirus program (Avira) doesn't have any influence

True for Windows (at least on 10). It works fine on LInux and MacOS and probably on WIn7 but Microsoft changed something.
It's mentioned in the beta topic AND there's an open ticket for this bug.

The work-around is:
1) Click on Preferences.
2) Under Theme, select something besides the Default

Most seem to work, but not all, and certainly not Default.

When your monitor is connected to the iGPU, does FAH give you the option of running FAH on the NV GPU? If not, do you have the option of (re-)installing the NV drivers?

That probably won't help you in the long-run but it might help whose of us who are trying to diagnose this problem.

Not that I'm recommending them, but NV is planning on selling a e-coin mining GPU which is supposed to be the same as a 1080* but without the extra hardware required to connect a monitor, so we have have people trying to exactly what I'm recommending you try. It might even solve the reported screen-lag problems.

When the monitor is connected to the iGPU it is possible to fold with the GPU after installation of the client.
But same problem here, after reboot or failed WU, it won't fold anymore.

I reinstalled NV drivers several times already with different driver versions.
