Trying to start Folding after a reinstall

Post by rfharbin »

I have had problems not getting a GPU WU over the last couple weeks. I do not mean over the weekend, I just ignore it when the GPU does not get a WU over a weekend. So I finished folding and uninstalled and reinstalled FAH (twice) but although the client would fold when freshly installed it would fail to start after a restart of the computer. When I tried to open FAHControl I received a popup saying that libpython2.7.dll is missing. This .dll is part of the FAHClient and I assume something is corrupting it. I am running Win10-64 Home. I have updated to Client 7.5.1 but I had the same problem with client 7.4.4 also is there a way to boot FAH up other than restarting the computer. I keep this computer running 24/7/365 except for updates as such I tried to use FAHControl to start folding.

Each time I restarted the computer FAH failed to start as it aways has done. When trying to get folding with the FAHControl the below message appeared in a popup.

FAHControl.exe – system Error

The code execution cannot proceed because because libpython2.7.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.

Note; The above .dll is in the FAHClient folder inspite of what the error says.

The FIRST time you run FAHClient, it should download GPUs.txt and it should configure the devices. Those actions should be saved so that the NEXT time you start FAH, it won't need to do those steps. Are you running FAH in the normal read/write directories or have you somehow set it up to run in a read_only directory?
CWD: C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient looks right, and it should be getting uupdated with GPUs.txt and other changes.

I have never had a reason to learn about how directory properties work or how they should be set. Every folder and subfolder under my "C" drive is read only including the Programs, Programs (x86) and all the folders inside them which includes the FAHClient and the lib folder in it But none of the exe or dll files inside the FAHClient folder are read only. These attribute check boxes are clear. My other computer is the same as this one.
I tried running FAHcontrol this morning and I received a popup saying "Cannot get zipimporter instance" There is a a library.zip file.

So apparently you are trying to run FAHControl and/or FAHClient from the Programs folder???? That's not the way to start FAH. It should have installed a shortcut/App_Button which you should use to start it. When you do, you'll probably end up in the read-only Programs folder instead of a place where FAH can put its working files.

Also, by Default, FAHClient should automatically start itself when you reboot but I've received mixed reports of that not working correctly.

in a browser, open http://client.foldingathome.org/ and tell me what you see.

No I installed FAH using the default option so it went to the Programs (x86) folder. What I was trying to say was that all folders and sub-folders in my "C" drive are read only in all my computers but the exe and dll files do not have any boxes checked in the properties (i.e. Right click on the file and click on Properties) in the C:\ Program files\ FAHClient\ folder as such it seems to me that everything should be working OK so I must be missing something.

I found the shortcut on my Administrative user profiles desktop. I use this computer to handle my banking and brokerage accounts, so I am very paranoid about safety and will very rarely have a reason to use my Administrative user profile. I have read experts saying that one should never use a Administrative account to surf. I have installed F@H both in my standard and Admin user profiles in the past and I did reinstall in both at different times over the last couple weeks but do not remember the details as to when etc.. Which is the best way?

I would never have guessed that the "HideConsole" file would start F@H, So I copied a shortcut from the Admin desktop to the "Start > All Programs > Startup folder
Is this the proper way to have F@H star on booting up the computer? If so no shortcut was installed there when I three times reinstalled F@H over the last two weeks.
IF so all is probably fixed. I am an hour past bedtime I will check everything out in the AM tomorrow. I wil post back if there is still a problem.

Many thanks for your helping me on this problem.

No ALL of the folders on the C: drive are read/only. Open C:\users and you will see your account name (and probably one other) Files under your username are not read/only.

Open Windows Explorer / File Manager. You'll probably see "Libraries" Go to the top of the page and replace whatever you see with %APPDATA% (with the % signs). Inside of that, you'll see a directory called FAHClient. Check the properties of FAHClient and then open it. One of the text files listed is called "log" or "log.txt" Open it. It should be the most recent version of file you posted above. Is it identical or if it's newer, post the first few pages as you did there.

Also, open http://client.foldingathome.org/ in a browser. What do you see?

I spent two plus hours tonight working on the problem tonight and am going to bed now Please reread my post just above yours. I had it open for a long time editing and reediting it.

FAH is designed to run only in the account that installs it. It should not be installed in the admin account unless you intend to run it there. Use the account that is normally logged on to the computer.

Unfortunately in Microsoft's understanding of how Windows should run the GPU belongs exclusively to the account that's logged on. In order to create somehing like a background task (See daemon in the Linux documentation) FAHClient must start and continue running more or less in a separate window to whatever else you're doing -- but that window is normally hidded from view since there's noting you can do with it. The log file would normally appear in the console window, so to keep you from worrying about it (or to keep you from closing that window, it's started by hideconsle. There's nothing preventing you from removing the hideconsole from the shortcut that starts FAH as long as you promise not to try to close it. (You can minimize it so it doesn't disturb whatever else you're doing.)

The actual console output is duplicated into a file and then made available for you to display (or filter) by code in FAHClient.

If you wish to interact with FAHClient, you need to use FAHControl or WebControl (unless you choose to use some rather obscure methodology using telnet). Typing or mousing anything into the (formerly) hidden window won't do anything except maybe kill FAHClient at an inopportune time.

If you open http://client.foldingathome.org/ in a browser, you'll have a limited view of what's happening with a limited ability to change anything. If you open FAHControl, you'll have full access to anything you might want to change and have a very detailed view of what's happening. The (formerly) hidden window running FAHClient shows only real-time console output.

A work-around might be to temporarily switch your regular user account to a power user account which should let you install Folding@home on that account directly. Then afterward after verifying it is work okay, you can reset the account to regular permissions.

Sunday morning I checked F@H to see if all was OK. The CPU version had failed immediately but the GPU was working very good so I set it to finish and later uninstalled F@H. Remembering several years back that when installing F@H it does not always go to the same place for the work folders I looked all through the "C" disk and found "C:\ Windows\SysWOW\ core" that must have been causing problems. I deleted it and reinstalled F@H in my standard user profile and all has been running very good since.

Thanks a lot, double, because I learned some new stuff that will help if I have a problem in the future. All this started because I was having trouble getting WU's for the GPU almost constantly over a number weeks and the server numbers shown in the log were phony, hopefully that problem is solved too..
