What are points for? Are they just for bragging rights or?

You can use them to 'tune' your system, trying different settings may alter the Points Per Day. Different numbers of CPUs, different video drivers, etc.

Bragging rights.

If your PPD falls off, you may need to investigate why: reboot PC, reboot router, reset wireless, etc.

If you go to look at PPD and everyone has 0 this update, you know it is not at your end. Sensibly, Pande Group uses the best hardware to capture and distribute WUs. This leaves less reliable hardware doing Statistics. Some time it can take days before Pande Group can get it fixed. (The server is prone to dying friday evenings on long weekends, so Pande Group has no one at the server room) Additionally, Pande Group is dependent on Stanford IT for any networking issues. As you might imagine, IT prioritizes getting staff running, then students, then folks who are not paying for Stanford IT. So sometimes we wait.

It also affects any CURE and FLDC rewards, but we aren't supposed to talk about those here. Google for more information.

Mentioned as a possible reward for folding, we have not shut those down. However, we have shut down veiled recruiting for them and requests for support. Folding@home has no connection with any of these reward programs, and this forum is not here to support them. That includes the alt-coins and other rewards given by other teams and organizations.
