Why do I constantly lose my % progress?

Post by danielk »

Hello.

I am new to folding@home. I just installed the software today and have been folding for 2-3 hours now. However I've noticed that at a certain point I had completed 10% of my job and then suddenly the % counter went down to zero, I lost my progress and the counter started going up from zero. I set the checkpoint frequency to 8 minutes, so that I don't lose any progress in case of the Internet connection stopping or something.

This situation happened a couple of times. Is this normal or I am experiencing some kind of a bug? Thank you.

Post your log per the instructions below.

Perhaps your system had an error; perhaps not.

Did you do the default install or did you try to do things differently? Were you logged on as the same user that's currently running FAH?

Hello, Bruce.

I did the default install. However I think I first started the app and after that I chose a username, received a passkey and entered them on the web interface. Here's a screenshot of my app: Image

It's been running for 5-6 hours now and I haven't received any points so far as I can see in the FAH web page. It % counter keeps increasing and reseting itself back to zero, than starts gaining again.

As for the log, I'm not sure what exactly you're asking me to do, so I'll just copy the whole log info. Here it is:

First, you do not receive points until you complete and return a WU.

Your various configuration changes mostly have also included a pause and restart of processing the WU. In one case you had not completed enough to have a checkpoint, the WU started back at 0. In all cases the WU restarts at the progress recorded in the last checkpoint if it exists and is not corrupted.

One note, the WU you have was downloaded with a CPU setting of 3. Even if you set your system to use all 4 threads available, it will never run with more than 3.

There is a bug in the current A7 core that results in the upload size for the results growing very large if there are frequent restarts. See the following topics - viewtopic.php?f=18&t=31876, viewtopic.php?f=18&t=31944, and a topic on a beta test of a new version of the core - viewtopic.php?f=24&t=31960.

Thank you for the detailed explanations, Joe.

I had a look at the threads you mentioned.

My progress now reached 99.99% and it has been stuck on this figure for the last 15-20 minutes. Is this normal, or is it the bug which is mentioned in those threads? I did paused the process like 3-4 times. I checked the logged, the last entry is from 3 hours ago, when I had problems with my Internet connection. It doesn't say anything about trying to upload data or failing to do so. What do you advise? Should I just wait?

I'm sorry if my questions sound dumb, I'm fairly new to all this, I hope you understand. :)

Just to clarify, if you have your client configured for 4 when the next WU downloads, that WU will run at any value between 1 and 4.

You have effectively changed the number of CPUs several times by moving the power slider, but ultimately you can't increase the value to 4 for this WU. Just let it finish at 3. You have also adjusted the checkpoint interval several times but each time you've made a change, the progress reverts to whatever checkpoint has been saved -- which has probably been the initial setting (if no checkpoint has been saved) so that's why things are getting set back to zero. Stopping making changes for a while will allow permanent progress to be stored in a new checkpoint.

No, your questions don't sound dumb. You're fairly new, as you say, but also very observant -- asking questions about things many folks wouldn't have noticed.

Probably the answer is "just wait" but you'll need to append another segment of your log showing what happened more recently. The progress up to 99% wasn't covered in your earlier post. (Start about about the point that the earlier log ended.

If it is still stuck at 99%, it probably makes sense to pause and resume and see what happens. It might back up to an earlier checkpoint ... or might not.

What I observe now is the % counter reaching 99.9% several times already and than starting back from zero eventhough I have set the frequency checkpoint to 8 minutes and haven't touched it since then. This was taken a few hours ago: Image

This screenshot is from a few minutes ago: Image

This is what puzzles me. It seems like the whole job is fragmented into many 99.9%'s and reaching this figure gets done only one fragment. Than it starts doing the next one from zero to 99.9%.

When it reverted back to zero, I checked the log and saw:

Code: Select all

19:02:41:WU00:FS00:0xa7:Completed 12271 out of 125000 steps (9%)
19:26:11:WU00:FS00:0xa7:Completed 12500 out of 125000 steps (10%)
20:37:19:WU00:FS00:0xa7:Completed 13750 out of 125000 steps (11%)
So basically these 99.9% is actually 1 percent done of the whole job, am I right on this one?

My guess from the information you have provided is that either the core process crashed in some way and restarted at the beginning, or that the process of writing out a checkpoint was interrupted and caused it to be corrupted. The same thing would happen, processing may start over at the beginning. You did not show enough of the log to tell.

One thing, there is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. It is often wrong, and this is one case where the screen captures of the appearance of FAHClient are not much help in troubleshooting. Please just post the log section that covers from just before to a bit after the progress reverting to zero. In this case the two pictures are from over 3 hours apart, a lot could have happened in that interval. The log usually does capture that information.

Your concept of "fragments" seems to suggest that the percent complete in the screenshot isn't meaningful. On the other hand, I see a screenshot saying the WU is 11.85% complete while the log has recently reported "Completed 13750 out of 125000 steps (11%)" which is completely consistent. I tend to believe that the log is correct. What's interesting is that it took 23m30 tos get from 9% to 10% and it took 1h11m08s to get from 10% to 11%. Ordinarily those two intervals should similar in duration. since the computation rate SHOULD be the same and the processing load SHOULD be about the same.

I have to ask: Is your OS configured to save power by sleeping when nobody is at the keyboard? FAH requires that the CPU be set to whatever setting tells it NOT to sleep but to continue processing. The other possibility is that you've chosen to have FAH process "on idle" which means it never goes into computing mode as long as somebody is at the keyboard.

Hey, guys!

I've have finally gotten my way around this nice program. :)) I've learned to work with it without having so many crashes and bugs. Thank you for the assistance.

It is all going normal regarding the % counter nowadays, it is steady and works fine. I'm on my third job right now.

I'd like to ask one thing. I decided to try how my other computer would compute, but it is an old and slow one. I accepted a job, but it is really not worth the time and electricity. Can I cancel the job without this affecting my bonus? I'm determined to complete 10 tasks before deadline, but do they have to be consecutive for this matter? Please, help me get around this situation.

@bruce The only time I don't fold is when my laptop is turned off. Otherwise I fold all the time. Folding does get slower when I use the laptop for surfing the web and gets faster when I'm not on the keyboard.

As i understand it, you must maintain a 80% completion rate to get the bonus.

One failure to complete should not be an issue.

Another choice is to set the WU to 'Finish', where it completes but does not start another,
