Cannot get more than 2 CPU cores to work on one slot.

Post by InfiniteVoid »

Doesn't mater how many cores I set in slot, I always get message "WARNING:WU01:FS03:AS lowered CPUs from X to 2". I could fold stuff much faster if I could use 6 cores out of 8 I have. Is it because of WU limitation or it is with my configuration?

I run on Ubuntu 18.04. Here is some log from when I changed num of cores during work, but even if I start work with 8 cores, there is same message: "lowered CPUs from X to 2"

Code: Select all

Hi InfiniteVoid and welcome to the forum.

How long have you been seeing this message? I'm curious if it only occurs for workunits from project 13832 or if this is something that you've been seeing in general for a while now.

Here is a generic step by step guide to setting CPUs in F@H

In the taskbar to the lower right of the screen, you should see a F@H molecule icon, click it (you may need to click an Up Arrow to see it ^)

The second item in this menu is Advanced Control, click it

On this screen to the left is a Configure button, click it

Now you get a screen with a Slots tab, click it

On this white field should be a cpu item, click it and then click edit

By default F@H set the number of CPUs to -1 meaning let the software decide.
You can enter any number from 1 to the number of threads your CPU supports.
If you have GPUs, F@H reserves one CPU per GPU to feed it data across the PCIE bus.
F@H has difficulty with large primes and their multiples number of CPUs.
7 is always large, 5 is sometimes large, and 3 is never large. Try to choose a number that is a multiple of 2 and/or 3.
2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 16, 18, 24, 27, etc. are good numbers of CPUs to choose.
5. 10. 15, 20 etc may work most of the time. Other numbers will bite you

Type the number you want, and click save. (i would choose 6 if I had a GPU that folds, and 8 if i didn't)

Also, any WU downloaded with a CPU setting will not be able to have its CPU sore usage increased above the number the WU was downloaded with. The setting will apply to the next WU downloaded. So if the WU was downloaded at a time that CPU:2 was set, then it will never run using more. However a WU downloaded at a higher number could be run for a time at CPU:2 and then returned to the original setting or one in between.
