Tentative procedure (fix) to install the 7.6.9 client on W10

Post by BP2020 »

This is my contribution to the support team & all for helping me out and is not intended for the end user. This is for evaluation purposes, to be compared with the 7.5.1 Fix Procedure. I'm making this new topic because some of this was buried in a post about my GPU slot not sticking (missing) but goes well above and beyond that. Doing this exact procedure enabled my starting folding with both my CPU/GPU straight away and after some time I can confirm now that both WUs finished with FahCore returned: FINISHED_UNIT (100 = 0x64), Sending unit results: id:00/01 state:SEND error:NO_ERROR... and the uploads were completed with Server responded WORK_ACK (400).

Procedure (fix) to install the 7.6.9 client on Windows 10 "correctly" using the Express Install

Issue: The installer isn't working as it should on Windows 10 in my use case using the Express Install (let's start folding ASAP).
Mitigation: As the installer will by default launch the application right after install and many will not close the client or restart/reboot, the impact from the issue will most likely be delayed until that moment.
Symptoms: Shortcut to launch the client not being created on the desktop & application not appearing in the Start menu after the installation.
Summary: Install under the Administrator account; copy a shortcut; run under the normal user account.

Detailed Procedure
  1. Log in with your Administrator account, launch the installer, do an Express Install, untick the Start Folding@Home checkbox at the end of the install process, Finish. (The folding at home shortcut appears on the desktop and menu items are created in the Start Menu.)
  2. Copy this shortcut to your normal user desktop (C:\Users\YourUserName\Desktop). Optional: If you know your card won't be recognized, as I do, immediately copy the GPUs.txt file to C:\Users\Administrator_or_short_name_for_it\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient.
  3. Log out of your Administrator account then log into your normal user account.
  4. Double-click the Folding@Home shortcut, the client will start, will minimize to the system tray and the Web control client will launch in a browser. Supply your credentials and click Save and this will start folding with default options and slots (CPU & GPU). You're done.
Auto startup etc. (Optional)
  • If you want the client to start every time you log in your normal account, add the shortcut from the desktop to: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. If you want that for all users then replace your user name with "All Users". For more control consider using the Task Scheduler. If you don't want the Web control client to start everytime the client starts, look at the properties of the shortcut and remove the --open-web-control part of the Target line; you will only have the client started in the System Tray, right click it and select either the Web control or Advanced control GUI to view either.

Thanks for the write-up, I have referenced it in this GitHub issue for the development team to consider: https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/fah-issues/issues/1398
