GPU Connection Problems?

Post by tiltingatfahcores »

Hello, I'm trying to leave FAH running on my old PC, but I am having GPU problems, and quickly getting out of my depth.

I checked, and my GPU is on the whitelist (GeForce GT 240)
When I first installed FAH, it detected 1 CPU slot. I manually added slots so I have 2 CPU and 1 GPU.
Whenever I look at the status, the CPU slot is working on something, but the GPU slot is always Downloading at 0%
The log makes it look like the server it's pinging is not responding.
Is there some problem with my setup?

Just delete the GPU folding slot for the GT 240. GPUs.txt is not just a whitelist, it also blacklists GPUs that can not be used - viewtopic.php?f=83&t=26208.

The entry for the GT 240 shows that is blacklisted:

Code: Select all

0x10de:0x0ca3:::GT215 [GeForce GT 240]
The blank fields between the colons in the middle indicate this.

Hello,
first of all, I am happy to contribute, so, thank you for this possibility and the support.

A few days ago I started F@H, following more or less the same steps described also by @tiltingatfahcores during the setup:
- CPU and 4 cores recognised by default (OK)
- GPU (NVIDIA) present, but not automatically present into the slots inside the Advanced Control GUI -> I added it manually, than it appeared also into the Advanced Control GUI.

After having checked the GPUs.txt list, it seems that the GPU I am currently using is supported (if I well understood it is whitelisted): it is an NVIDIA GeForce 820M.

Everything seems well configured, but what happens is:
- The Client connects to the server and downloads a WU
- Starts the executable (FahCore 0x22 appears into the log as actually a FahCore_22.exe is present inside the core directory):

Code: Select all

C:\Users\...\FAHClient\cores\cores.foldingathome.org\v7\win\64bit\Core_22.fah
- Then a

Code: Select all

BAD_WORK_UNIT (114 = 0x72)
error appears into the log.
- Again the Client requesta another WU, connects, downloads, than the same error appears into the log and so on, in a loop.

Actually the GPU is not calculationg anything since yesterday May 2, 2020.

Here is a summary of the log file filtered for what concern only the GPU slot:

Code: Select all

Thanks, that solves a lot of mysteries. Here is a link to some more information I found about the 192.0.2.1:8080 thing -- it looks like the newer versions of FAH might have more informational text when this happens: https://github.com/FoldingAtHome/fah-issues/issues/1309

It's almost like the project I learned about 10 years ago has grown super rapidly in the past few months! ;)

Confusing relics of the past?:
* blacklisted and whitelisted gpu all being in the same txt file called whitelist
* server recognizes an incompatible setup, but redirects to dummy WU server (192...) because it can't update the local gui in a meaningful way

Welcome to the F@H Forum TheDareDavid,

Can you please post the first 100 lines of the log file which will show what the client thinks your system is and how it is configured.

Also, you seem to be getting issues so I would suggest that you review this topic and see if you can resolve your issue: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=16526

Thank you for the reply @ PanterX.

Sorry for my late reply, but for many reasons I wasn't able to connect again to the forum during the last week.
ByTheWay, during the week I connected again many times to fold, but the same issue of "not good WU assignement to the GPU" still remains.

So, here are the first 100 lines from the log file:

Re: GPU Connection Problems?

Post by PantherX »

What GPU model do you have? Have you installed the latest version of the Drivers from Nvidia? Is your GPU overclocked? What temperatures is your GPU running at?

Currently, there seems that the supply of GPU WUs haven't quite matched the demand of GPU WUs so it can take a while to get a GPU WU. However, it is not good that your GPU is getting this error regularly:
FahCore returned: BAD_WORK_UNIT (114 = 0x72)

As that indicates an issue on your system which needs to be addressed first to allow your GPU to continue folding without issues.

Re: GPU Connection Problems?

Post by TheDareDavid »

Well,

the GPU model is an NVIDIA GeForce 820M with dedicated memory (of course).
It's not overclocked, it works with other softwares (like CAD softwares which make use of it) and I have the latest drivers installed on it (latest referred to the last made available by NVIDIA, as the GPU is not so young... ).

Consider also that it is a week that I am experiencing this problem and no usable WU is ever arrived to the GPU since then...

What type of error is the BAD_WORK_UNIT (114 = 0x72) ?
What can I do to have a look if it is true or it is a false positive?

Assuming that you have been folding on the GPU for a while without issues, a potential reason that you're encountering this issue now is because Project 14253 is a massive one (438,651 atoms) and was released a few days ago (viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35080). Different projects may stress the GPU differently and generally speaking, folding is measurably more stressful than CAD or other benchmark/stress tests.

BAD_WORK_UNIT is when the sanity check (data/science check) fails. Statistically, there are bad WUs but it is very few but the same issue can be caused by hardware issues too. A quick way is to look up the WU and if other donors can successfully fold it, it is a good WU and the issue lies in your system 99% of the time. Currently, you're the only donor that the WU has been assigned to: https://apps.foldingathome.org/wu#proje ... ne=4&gen=1 so wait a few hours and check back.

Your 820M is one of two different models given that name by nVidia. It is based on the older Fermi GF117 chip and is essentially a rebadged GT 620M GPU running at a bit higher clock rate. There was also a GT 720M that again was a a rebadged GT 620M.

Apparently a later version of the GT 820M was planned and possibly released that was based on a Kepler GPU chip, but I can't find quickly any further information on that.

The Fermi based GPUs are starting to show some issues lately as researchers have started to use some simulation methods available in the OpenMM based Core_22 that had not been used in the past. The Fermi based GPUs support OpenCL 1.1 and the software is based on OpenCL 1.2 support being present. These GPUs had worked mostly before, now there are projects they fail on. It is guessed that the projects are now calling for OpenCL 1.2 specific support that these don't have. They are looking into this to determine details of what works and what doesn't.

That set of issues may be related to the errors you have seen. The other possibility is this being a laptop. Many laptops with a both a discrete GPU like the GT 820M and the iGPU from an Intel processor such as your I5-5200U use nVidia's Optimus to switch between using the iGPU for low power needs and the other GPU. If folding starts up the folding core and the GT 820M is not active, then it will fail.

Workarounds posted here have included disabling the iGPU, or setting the discrete GPU to always be active. Details will depend on the version of Optimus present. I would check for how this is done on your laptop.
