CPU at 30% GPU Not Being Used

Post by Burner1061 »

So I'm setting up a bunch of machines for Folding@Home. The first one is a Dell laptop. I set it to full power, while I'm working. So 2 questions: It says CPU:4 7.02%. Is it not using any other cores? CPU usage is stuck at about 38%. GPU usage is at 7%. How do I make sure Folding@Home is using the full power of my machines? Thank you in advance!

Welcome to Folding@Home!

There is a longstanding 'bug' in the CPU client, It starts the first Work Unit before it knows how many CPU threads are available, so the first WU only uses 1 thread, the second WU uses the amount you have configured.

I have no Fix but wait for the second WU.

Are you using GPU-Z's Sensor tab to monitor GPU usage? Window's Task Manager lies.

I guess you CPU has four cores ... If you use the advanced control you will be able to check/make sure you CPU slot is set at 3 threads (cores) as one is kept for serving the GPU ... You will also be able to check the GPU slot is properly configured ... If you post your log here (making sure to include the first 100 lines or so that has the config details ... For posting logs see viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26036

You may find that your laptop struggles with both GPU and "max" CPU due to thermal issues - FaH really does work hardware hard - reducing the thread (core) count can help reduce that - Laptops are also very susceptible to blocked cooling ducts both because of their design and style of use so worth making sure it is nice and clean (many videos online help with this).
