f@h sometimes crashes my computer

Post by airaani »

Log below.
My initial launch of f@h client crashed my computer. I had some trouble getting it to run after that even after reinstalling, but uninstalling, redownloading and reinstalling fixed that, and I got f@h running yesterday. My computer updated and restarted last night, and when I went to launch f@h again today it again immediately crashed my whole computer.

Welcome to Folding@Home! I am just a folder like you, but I noticed something odd

22:11:34: GPU 0: Bus:1 Slot:0 Func:0 NVIDIA:7 GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] 6463
22:11:34: CUDA Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:6.1 Driver:11.1
22:11:34:OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:1.2 Driver:457.9
22:11:34:OpenCL Device 1: Platform:1 Device:0 Bus:NA Slot:NA Compute:1.2 Driver:20.19

You have one GPU, but for some reason two OpenCL drivers.

If I had to guess,
22:11:34:OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:1.2 Driver:457.9
is an old Nvidia Driver you can upgrade here
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/results/172458/

I think
22:11:34:OpenCL Device 1: Platform:1 Device:0 Bus:NA Slot:NA Compute:1.2 Driver:20.19

is an Intel driver.
DDU may be able to uninstall it
https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/di ... nload.html

If not, you will have to look for Intel graphics drivers in the control panel.

(I would advise you to keep all your issues in one thread or you will need to duplicate all your response, as the same questions will be asked in each)

Oh, sorry, on another forum I'm on they prefer you close the thread once your issue is resolved, and start a new one.

Yes I think you're right about the Nvidia driver being out of date, I'm not sure why it hasn't prompted me to update it but I'll do that now. I think the motherboard has some sort of built in graphics capability (it does have a DVI port) that I never use, so maybe that's the second driver?

I think OpenCL version 20.xx is the Intel version of OpenCL (also known as the Windows version). I won't work with a Geforce GPU (and as far a FAH is concerned, can be uninstalled.) Version 457.xx is a game-ready version from NVidia and it will certainly run FAH.

Okay, I updated my Nvidia driver to the 466.11 linked above, and uninstalled the other one. It still crashed.

Check your system for overheating. FAH is designed to accomplish the maximum throughput that the hardware can produce so fah can create more heat than the traditional overclocking benchmarks. .... so Yes, FAH will crash an overclocked computer that is called "100% stable"

BTW. what is 99% stable but another name for unstable.:D?

Well it looks like that was probably it. I moved to Light power and it's been running for over a day with no crashes. Thanks!

Clean out the dust. Consider adding fans or just turning up the ones you have. If your system has aged, consider a new application of thermal paste under the heatsink. (Consult an expert)
