I'm going to clear up this little titbit as best as I can.

The FAH client is really a collection of 3 different packages, FAHClient, FAHControl and FAHViewer, which can be downloaded and installed as a package or separately.

FAHClient is essentially the hub of the system on the local computer, it keeps an eye on the work units and communicates with the FAH server to request new units and uploads completed work units.

FAHControl is what gives you an overview of what the FAH Client is doing on your system and allows you to tweak some settings.
The difference here is that FAHControl can be setup on one computer to monitor and control clients running on multiple computers, it can even ignore the client on the local computer.
It communicates with the FAHClient(s) through network communication, including on the local computer.
"Online" simply means the FAHClient is running and FAHControl can communicate with it. The alternative to this is "Connecting" which can be caused by a multitude of reasons. This is not an indication of whether the FAHClient has a connection to the folding at home servers.
"Inactive" simply means that none of the folding slots on the selected computer are processing work units. This should be showing "Running" which means at least one of the folding slots on that computer is processing a work unit.

FAHViewer is a tool which visualises the work units your computer is currently working on.
It has its pros and cons.
It's nice to look at but most people won't know what they're looking at.
It only show what is currently on your computer and only as much as your computer has processed.
It can't show completed work units. FAHViewer relies on the snapshot files generated during processing of the work units. These snapshots are wiped from your system once the work unit is completed and returned to a folding at home server.

What happens when you visit http://207.53.233.146 and http://129.32.209.205 in a web browser?

The "short response" error is often an indication that a firewall (on your machine, in your router or the broadband provider's router) or some security software (like anti-virus) might be blocking the network connection or preventing the client from downloading the folding core.

Does it change if you tether your machine to a cell phone connection?

Wel come to Folding@Home!

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/q ... 4000.c2930

Says your GPU meets F@H minimum specs.

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... 0-ghz.html

Your CPU meets the latest specs as well.

I would be sure your firewall allows FAHclient to get port 80 and 8080

I see a webpage open up with Folding logo for both the IP addresses in Firefox. Here is the screenshot: https://ibb.co/zHVK5bV

Code: Select all

06:28:50:           Args: --child /etc/fahclient/config.xml --run-as fahclient
06:28:50:                 --pid-file=/var/run/fahclient.pid --daemon
...
[91m06:28:50:ERROR:Exception: Could not bind socket to 0.0.0.0:7396: Address already in use[0m
[91m06:28:50:ERROR:Exception: Could not bind socket to 0.0.0.0:36330: Address already in use[0m
How are you starting FAHClient? It looks like it was already running under a different home directory when this instance started (if it had tried to use the same home, it would have failed to get a database lock). Depending on how comfortable you are with systemd, you can do something like the following to ensure you only have one active instance running on a Linux system:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl disable FAHClient.service
sudo systemctl stop FAHClient.service
sudo killall FAHClient
sudo chown -R fahclient:fahclient /var/lib/fahclient
sudo systemctl edit --force --full FAHClient.service
The above ensures that no instance of FAHClient is running, then opens root's default text editor. Paste something similar to the following into it:

Code: Select all

[Unit]
Description=Folding@home V7 Client
Documentation=https://foldingathome.org

[Service]
Type=simple
User=fahclient
Group=fahclient
WorkingDirectory=/var/lib/fahclient
ExecStart=/usr/bin/FAHClient --config=/etc/fahclient/config.xml --chdir=/var/lib/fahclient/

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
This creates a new native systemd unit file that will override the converted init script that ships in the installer (and doesn't work well with modern Linux). You can then enable it:

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl enable FAHClient.service
sudo systemctl start FAHClient.service
This won't solve the connection problem you are having, but it will make it easier to troubleshoot since you will have only one authoritative log file.

I don't know what is exactly happening. When I go to the IP addresses mentioned in the log file, it opens in the browser. I have checked that my firewall is not blocking the app. In fact, I switched the firewall off. However, I got a job as soon as I turned on my VPN which has a dedicated public IP with port forwarding enabled.

Something could be happening at the level of your ISP or your local router. NAT might not be working correctly, or they might have some kind of packet filter or reverse proxy running that isn't quite up to specifications. A VPN would bypass those kinds of things.

Yes, it is very hard to figure out the issue especially when I'm not the network administrator.

Basically the FAHClient process needs the same connectivity as a web browser, TCP connections (HTTP) over ports 80 and/or 8080 and both inbound and outbound. Default setting of many firewalls is to block that type of connection if not from a "known browser" like Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera, or Chrome. The blockage could be local, this is a common issue with Windows firewall and MS Defender. Or this can happen with an institutional or corporate firewall.

Another type of blocking that some have reported about firewall devices is default blocking of data downloads from raw IP addresses. The client uses that type of connection for WU downloads and uploads. One person reported their device would let through the connection if the address was connected to by using their browser and connecting to the servers by the domain name first.

Yes, I'm using an institutional internet. I can access it through a web browser (Firefox) but the FAHClient encounters connectivity problems. Can you suggest a solution to this issue? I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.
