I just stumbled on that thread as well - guess that is why we are beta testing!

Yes, we're all learning and it's very different.

    On the upper right pull-down menu (next to "About") change Novice to Advanced.
    On the upper left, select Configure
    Pick the Slots tab
    Hilight the gpu slot
    Click Edit
    At the bottom below Extra slot options (expert only) choose Add
    Enter client-type in the Name field and advanced in the Value field and click OK
    Click OK
    Click Save
Wait for the GPU slot to download a new assignment.

and remember you are now beta testing a new client, a new core, and a new project, so you may encounter problems.

Actually, it is already released:
...we have now released ATI core 16 GPU3 WUs into advanced methods for Folding@home...

However, I want to stress this part:
We are doing a gradual rollout of these WUs,...
http://folding.typepad.com/news/2011/03 ... oards.html

So all I can say is that you be patient and eventually, you will get a FahCore_16 when your Client is assigned one. Do remember that if there are a few FahCore_16 WUs, and if hundreds of V7 Clients asking, the majority will not get FahCore_16. All you can do is to leave the Client running and hope for the best :D

EDIT -> Please note that I am using "small" values so it is easy to understand the situation.

Hello everyone,

Where do you download this from? Is it just the 6.41 client on the downloads page? It doesn't mention ATI support yet... A download location isn't mentioned in the typepad post or Dr. Lin's forum post.

OK! Think I found it now... Has its own thread. doh.

Thanks!

I do not recommend you go directly to that download page. Read the first posts in this forum and then spend some time reading the documentation provided and then read whatever posts you find in this forum that might apply to you. The client is beta, Core_16 is beta, and the project mentioned in Dr. Lin's post is "advanced" You need to be prepared for the chances of encountering difficulties although everything may go fine for you. It's called beta for a reason.

AMD GPU3 & Proj 11293

Postby theteofscuba » Sat Apr 02, 2011 2:44 am

Ook so I'm told this project 11293 is mainly used to validate that the 16 core produces the right results, but is there any time frame for when larger WUs will be available? I'm told that the new core will crunch better when working with larger proteins, and that is exciting to me.

Read this forum. Everybody is excited (including me!). but first things first.

Nothing big will happen until after the bugs that have been found [System crash, Jerky movies, Assignments leaking to unsupported hardware or not running on supported hardware, etc.] have been corrected.

That's why it is called beta or advanced methods, not production.

Like the "boss" once said to "Dilbert" (paraphrased): Please provide me with a list of all undiscovered bugs. ;)

Hello p0wer,

You have my attention.
p0wer wrote:mickythebeagle, core 16 WU is on advanced. You have to set "client-type" to "advanced" in GPU slot configuration.

I can't see 'client type' as an option for my GPU slot, please take a shufti at this shot.

It would be really useful to have a description w. images of how to do it with the graphical client and an example of the xml config file for us noobs, pretty please. For instance, I am not sure if the <client-type v="advanced"/> option should be global like this...
My xml file looks like...
Code: Select all
<config>
  <!-- Logging -->
  <verbosity v='3'/>

  <!-- Remote Command Server -->
  <password v=''/>

  <!-- User Information -->
  <passkey v=''/>
  <team v='199125'/>
  <user v='Scandalman'/>
  <client-type v="advanced"/>
  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='SMP'/>
  <slot id='1' type='GPU'/>
</config>

or per slot like this...
Code: Select all
<config>
  <!-- Logging -->
  <verbosity v='3'/>

  <!-- Remote Command Server -->
  <password v=''/>

  <!-- User Information -->
  <passkey v=''/>
  <team v='199125'/>
  <user v='Scandalman'/>
  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='SMP'/>
  <slot id='1' type='GPU'/>
    <client-type v="advanced"/>
</config>

With best regards,

Paul.

Scandal, youre on the right track. In that screenshot of yours, see the "Extra Slot Options" box. Click add, name is "client-type" and value is "advanced"

Very, very useful - just what I needed.

Thanks!

For anyone else who fiddles with xml files, my config.xml now looks like...
Code: Select all
<config>
  <!-- Folding Slot Configuration -->
  <client-type v='advanced'/>

  <!-- Logging -->
  <verbosity v='3'/>

  <!-- Remote Command Server -->
  <password v=''/>

  <!-- User Information -->
  <passkey v=''/>
  <team v='199125'/>
  <user v='Scandalman'/>

  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='SMP'/>
  <slot id='1' type='GPU'/>
</config>
after using the GUI steps outlined above.

Weirdly going back into config doesn't list this client-type option in the 'extra slot options' section - which is where it appeared when it was added.

Best, Paul.
