Based on what you say above, I tried starting the control first and then the client, same error. I then am able to start the client without the control using the Start menu shortcut.
Thanks,
Larry

Under Preferences, make sure the Autostart box is checked, in the Local Client section.

Sounds like this was changed at some point.

Re: FAHClient V7.1.38 released (4th Open-Beta)

Postby HendricksSA » Fri Nov 18, 2011 1:50 am

Followup to my previous post about not being able to add a GPU slot without a workaround. This is for a recognized GPU that finished a work unit minutes earlier.

I can easily create the situation without having to do a new install. Using 7.1.38 I simply deleted my GPU slot. I then tried adding it by clicking on the radio button for GPU leaving the three -1 defaults alone. When I then save the changes, the GPU isn't added. The log reflects the attempt to change control.xml but the slot is not saved. I then restart FAH Control and the GPU slot is not present. I then see the popup warning about no default for gpu-index. To save it I have to change the gpu-index to zero. I can then restart FAH Control with a working GPU slot using gpu-index 0. If I want to change it back to a -1, I can edit the slot, make the change back to -1, and save the changes. The client warns me it cannot save the changes, but it will and they will be present on a restart. During this, I noticed the gpu = true flag is changed to gpu = false but that seems to be overridden by the GPU entries in the folding slot.

Relevant log follows. This log begins with the GPU slot deleted, the unsuccessful attempt to add it, and finally changing gpu-index=0 and the slot is saved.

I can't get to Preferences, you see I have no System Tray icon and am unable to start the Control app. Have I neglected to install something? The file I installed is fahclient_7.1.38_Windows-XP-32bit-release.

Uninstall. Reinstall, custom. Enter name, team, client type, etc.

Don't change how the client is started. Leave these settings like this image shows...

Third retry. Same error. Is there a startup switch or something? My startup script looks like this: Target: "C:\Program Files\FAHClient\FAHControl.exe" This may be the problem: Start in: "C:\Documents and Settings\Larry\Application Data\FAHClient"

"C:\Program Files\FAHClient\FAHControl.exe"
and
"C:\Documents and Settings\Larry\Application Data\FAHClient"
are correct for the start menu shortcut settings.

XP install is pretty basic. If the OS is up to date, and you haven't tried to customize the OS (uninstalled or disabled parts of XP), then the FAH installer just works, and FAH starts running automatically, just like in your other system.

I really don't know what's going on there, the environment variable does have FAH in the Path, but it will not run, so I am downgrading to 623, which was working fine. Thanks though.

Do you have .NET 2.0 installed (and updated)?

You were right on the mark with .NET being the issue with my installation of 7.38. It is now churning away with my two other machines. I see no mention of it in the Guide though.

I have a suggestion to one feature that has been bugging me often, i use folding on my desktop and occassionally i need to reboot for certain things, and it automatically start folding causing a slower boot up. a feature like "Pause on boot" would be helpful for situations like that.

A bit more detail may be useful here, but assuming you have Windows 7: Open the Start menu and type "System Configuration" without the quotation marks. A link to the System Configuration tool will appear under Programs. Open the Startup tab and uncheck the fah(whatever version) box. Reboot and that should mean you will have to start fah manually.

You can do something similar with other versions of Windows.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hi Lord_Meshadieme (*bow*) and welcome to the F@h support forum!

You can do this from v7's controls already. See v7's documentation: https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/F ... Configure1
I've never done this before, but you can make some global slot options to do that, although the easiest solution might be to simply go to Preferences, and uncheck Autostart. From the documentation it says "The default is checked hence FAHControl will automatically start the slots. It is recommended to leave it checked."
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

After losing bonus points for my first WU after installing the V7 beta because it defaults to slots started and active, I now have it set up so the slot is paused on startup. I now copy a skeleton version of that client's config.xml file to a new install so I can be certain to get my username, team and passkey set before any folding units start. That "pause on start true" setting for the slot also helps out when I am doing software and OS updates that require one or more restarts. I do not uncheck the Autostart in the preferences pane.

P.S. At the moment the server for the wiki linked in Jesse_V's post is not responding, so I can't link to the specific part that shows how to add the setting.
