Please help with configuration of GPU clients

Postby John C MacAlister » Mon Apr 23, 2012 1:41 pm

I have one HD 6570 GPU and one HD 6790 GPU running with a Phenom II X4 and a Phenom II X6, respectively. I must have set up the FAH program incorrectly as these run well, but take over twelve hours to complete one task. In contrast, they process POEM tasks in around an hour.

Can anyone please help me a relative computer illiterate?

Thanks

Welcome to the foldingforum.org, John C MacAlister

You have not provided enough information to give you much help, but I'm sure we can remedy that.

Which OS are you running? Windows/Linux/ or OS-X? Which client did you install? You're posting in a topic for V6.23, but if you visited the download page, you may have installed V7.1.52 and they're very different.

It's not impossible for a FAH WU to take a few hours or much longer, so there may be nothing wrong. It all depends on which project you've been assigned, (and to a lesser degree, which hardware you have, which we already know.) You can't really compare a WU from POEM@HOME with a WU from FAH. In fact, you can't really compare one FAH Project with another FAH Project unless the proteins are equally complex.

If you have found the FAH log, it would be helpful if you posted that, too. If not, we'll help you find it.

It's possible to run FAH on both the HD 6570 and the HD 6790 GPUs as well as on the X4 and the X6 CPUs, although they would be running four different projects, one on each device. You may or may not choose to do that, however. More about that later.

Hi, Bruce:

Thank you for your speedy response. Here's the requested information:

OS: Win7 64 bit, both machines
FAH Client: 7.1.52
Project: 11293 (on the Phenom II X6 1090T with the HD 6790)
61.5% complete, eta 3 hours

P112923 : Test simulations of a single full-length amyloid beta (Abeta) monomer in water:
A pathological marker of Alzheimer's disease is the senile plaques composed of Abeta peptides in patient brains. The simulation system is composed of a single full-length Abeta in water. These simulations will serve as a test of force-field usage (ffamber99sb), system setup and to build up possible Markov states for Abeta monomer, which will serve as great starting points for future oligomerization studies.
Points and final deadlines:
project 11293: 1835 points, preferred deadline 6 days, final deadline 10 days

I have accumulated some 124,000 points (team 214702) since joining in February 2012. However, as I watched my father succumb to Alzheimer's, I would like to contribute as much as possible to your Alzheimer's research, in particular. I am heavily committed at present to processing POEM and WCG project tasks, but can change my priorities. Processing so few FAH project tasks to date has left me impatient to do more.

Thanks for your offer of help.

John

Almost every line in the log you posted is repeated and the order ends up somewhat jumbled. I have not seen that before, but it doesn't really prevent me from understanding what it says.

14:17:09:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Failed to advance statement result: The database file is locked is not a good sign. It does seem like you've managed to start FAHClient and FahCore_16 twice and that's supposed to be impossible -- and certainly bad if somehow the interlock isn't working.

In Task Manager, under the Processes tab, which processes have been started which begin with "FAH..."?

Did you install FAH "for me only"?

What shortcuts do you see in All_Programs+Startup?

Looks like you've some how got two FAHClient processes running in the same directory. How are you starting the client? Did you perhaps install with autostart and then also enable client autostart from FAHControl? Looks like the file locking that should have prevented this problem didn't work on your setup.

Hi, Joseph:

I have completely uninstalled FAH and deleted all the associated files I could find. I then restarted the PC and installed FAH anew.

A copy of the log produced so far appears below my question.

Question: can I make FAH run on all six cores? If so, how do I do that? Not being a programmer, I want a simple solution. I find WCG and POEM processing suits me because of their simplicity. If I can, I will contribute more to FAH, but cannot get into programming which is not in my skill set. In 2008, I retired from a 42 year career in accounting where I used other peoples' programs to produce the data I needed for analysis and reporting. I have five volunteer jobs in retirement in which I use my leadership, organization and verbal communication skills, but am too old to learn programming....please help me contribute to the extent possible with my Phenom II X6 1090T to FAH. The Phenom II X4 will remain dedicated to WCG and POEM processing for now.

Thanks!

Yes you can. No you do not need any programming skills at all. You can simply run an SMP slot (the client will most likely suggest a setup of SMP+GPU when you first run it), and the client will automatically detect the number of cores. You should see "smp:6" in the slot description.

The simple solution is to install using all of the default settings. Don't change anything during the installation, and the client will automatically use all of your 6 cores.

Naturally, you can still enter your fah user name, team #, etc.

In the log posted above, it looks like you purposefully changed from the default of (GPU+SMP) to GPU only. GPU only will not use all of your CPU cores.

Thank you: done. FAH will now run on both machines as well as POEM and WCG tasks.

Mixing/sharing resources between DC projects is not a good idea. I don't know about POEM or WCG tasks, but FAH tasks are VERY time sensitive, as are the points. Unless you dedicate one or two CPU cores to each task, they will all run slower. That may not hurt POEM or WCG schedules, but it does impact FAH schedules. Please consider this carefully.

FAH really likes to have pretty nearly exclusive access to however many cores you tell it to use. Start with 6 and then figure out how many cores you want to allocate to each task. Does POEM use one core most of the time? Does WCG use two most of the time? Will your GPU use one most of the time? (Substitute your own expected numbers for these values that I made up arbitrarily.) That leaves 6-1-2-1 = 2. for FAH's CPU based projects in the SMP slot. When running without SMP, I would expect Task Manager to report your system is 60% to 65% busy, so with those numbers, I would set the SMP slot to smp:2 and let it run.
