I'm having the same problem. I initially downloaded F@H last weekend and received the exact same error message. I uninstalled F@H and reinstalled it this morning, but I am still running into the same problem. I am able to go to and download all the links previously posted. If anyone has has any suggestions on how to fix it I would greatly appreciate it!

After spending the week talking to a very helpful and knowledgeable IT guy who's testing out many possibilities regarding this problem, he even installed FAH on his Ubuntu machine. it seems something in my faculty is blocking FAH from acquiring the core, however even though he contacted other departments to free up the http://www.stanford.edu IP as well as the work and collection servers, it still won't work. I had to manually add the core to the computers, and they now run fine. However he will still keep working to figure out this problem. The IT director still has to check if the faculty principal allows the extra energy costs that will incur from running FAH on all machines, and has to run some security protocols (checking if the moment of contact of the FAH client with the collection and work servers creates any vulnerabilities someone might use to invade the machine) before he can authorize me to run FAH in all machines, so it will still be a while.

So you're saying that the Faculty has something like Net Nanny to protect the students from the evils of the internet, including sites like stanford.edu. Right?

You didn't mention Assignment Servers.

It may help your IT guy to know that FAH contacts assign.stanford.edu:8080 or assign[2,3,4].stanford.edu on ports :8080 or :80 from the name in DNS to be redirected to a work server which is then contacted by an explicit IP address to download and upload data. If FAH needs a new FahCore, that will again refer to DNS. Some proxy/firewall software care whether you use DNS or explicit addresses.

V7 seems to have good support to set up FAH to work with a proxy, though I have not used it, myself.

It would be very helpful if you posted the log from FAH so we could see what's actually happening.

No, it does not have such programs that I know of, I'll confirm later.

I showed him the IPs of Work and Collection servers and he has freed those up. I don't if by "Assignment Server" you mean the Work Server, probably not. While he did check the numeral IP of folding.stanford.edu and freed that up, neither of us had any idea of those "assign2", "assign3" and "assign4" addresses, I'll tell him to free those up as well!

I`ll ask him to provide the full log, but I can tell you in advance that the error message stated that FAH had a problem with being unable to read the "package header".

If not a net nanny, then what application is being used to "free up" those IP addresses? Firewall? Proxy?

Make sure to include all the IP addresses listed on the Project Summary page linked in the tool bar at the top of this forum page.

I just spoke with the IT guy and his Ubuntu machine (still) cannot download FAH, displaying the following log. The "package header" error is no longer present, giving way to other errors:

Because of the "connection refused" error he believes the FAH servers might somehow be refusing the connection. He spoke to a guy who I believe is responsible for the faculty-wide firewall, and this guy says there are no rules or anything blocking the FAH IPs or ports. My IT guy checked some weekly reports from what I believe is the faculty-wide firewall on his e-mail, and FAH's IPs did not show up as being blocked in the report either.
Interestingly enough, he ran a virtual Windows XP environment (instead of Ubuntu), installed FAH on it and it worked normally! He did mention the virtual environment was on "a server" though, so it might be on a different machine he has remote access to.
Finally, I started installing FAH on new machines in the computer lab, one of them managed to download the core normally. I installed FAH with the exact same settings on the machine just beside it and it couldn't download the core -.- I even disabled the firewall and antivirus and ran CCleaner prior to reinstalling, to no avail. I am honestly stumped. I guess it's much easier to just manually add the core on each machine that cannot fetch the core rather than trying to solve this bizarre problem.

By the way when I say "machine" I mean a computer, I can't remember if the term "machine" as a synonym to "computer" is valid in English or not.

Ask your IT guy if they've recently made some network changes to support IPV6. Somebody else solved a similar problem by removing a recent change to IPV6 but didn't specify why he decided to do that. Maybe that's the difference between one machine and another.

(Yes, we use either "computer" or "machine" as synonyms when it's clear that the machine we're talking about is a computer. A car is also a machine, but you wouldn't be using the word that way in this discussion.)

Interesting, I'm also having this trouble on my just newly reinstalled Kubuntu 12.04 machine that has ipv6. I guess I'll need to dig around to see what in the ipv6 settings could cause this?

[edit] Haven't a clue why this is happening. Had to actually go through the pain of downloading the core(s) manually. Connections to the work unit servers are working normally. And even core downloading works fine from browser/wget/anything else except the fahclient.

Just keep an eye open for core updates. Until the problem is figured out, any core updates will cause the same problem again.

Haha! I disabled IPv6 on two machines that wouldn't download the core and they are working now! Sweet! Problem solved apparently, how many internets do you want as a reward? :)

Good, someone updated the IPV6 support ticket on the bugtracker. I wonder if the Stanford webpages recently got ipv6 support, because this problem didn't happen before, even when I also had ipv6 connection on my end. Could mess up the client if it assumes ipv4, but gets ipv6 instead.

Re: Core won't download (IPV6?)

Postby DeeGee » Thu May 10, 2012 4:53 am

I downloaded old V6.23 console client to my windows computer that is on the same ipv6 network. As it tried downloading core, it crashed! :D
So I guess this isn't just affecting V7, it's just that old clients rarely need to download new cores...

Now I think that this probably also affects my Windows V7 client, so I hope no new core downloads anytime soon, at least until this is fixed... Probably should test what happens when I move the cores to temporarily to somewhere safe keeping.
[edit] Actually there doesn't seem to be any other cores than A4 and gpu cores 11 and 16 downloaded... So If my pc has tried to fold any other cores, it hasn't been able to download them.
[edit2] Logs show that core11 was downloaded successfully on 04/04/12 so this problem should have surfaced between then and now.
[edit3] Also tested the old v6.02 (32.bit) linux client and it downloaded core just fine. Newer 6.34 (64-bit) segfaulted when trying to download core. Does 6.02 download the cores from same website as the newer ones? It didn't show the address like the newer ones.

Re: Core won't download (IPV6?)

Should a new support ticket be made to fix this problem? Seems like jcoffland isn't interested in adding ipv6 support and I must agree that it isn't needed in the immediate future.
But fixing the client so that it doesn't completely fail even if you happen to have ipv6 in your network would be nice... It isn't like testing with a ipv6 tunnel is very hard. For example sixxs.net tunnel that I use even has a automatic setup client (aiccu) that is simple to use.

Microsoft hasn't worked out all the bugs in Win7. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2533454 and set "Prefer IPV4 over IPV6" I think that might fix it. The world wide rollout is supposed to continue to support IPv4 in a dual-stack configuration and that part of Microsoft's roll-out has failed. The only urgency to add IPV6 to FAH is when FAH has to start adding servers that cannot be reached with IPV4 and that's years and years away.
