#914 Core won't download (IPV6)

PostPosted: Wed Apr 25, 2012 4:50 pm

I am trying to get FAH to run on my college teacher's computer on his request. However the Update_Core process does not complete and FAH is not calculating anything. I have disabled the UAC warning messages, reinstalled the client while running as administrator, and changed the data and client installation folders, restarted the PC, disabled firewall and antivirus (both McAfee), but still the problem persists. The slot itself says "Ready" while the WU column says "Update_Core". The log is as follows:

The core it's trying to fetch is "0xa4".

Thanks.

Could you post more of the log? That way we can see more of what is going on here. IMO, there's not enough info shown in the log. I'd like to see some kind of repeating message or something like that.

That's the full log, and I think the repeating message is already there.

Notice how it tries to connect to Stanford twice. I couldn't stay at my professor's computer to see if it would repeat further, but I left FAH running there, I'll try to go there now and see what the log displays.

Can you download Core_a4.fah manually with a browser on that machine?

Sure, if you can tell me how.

I went back to his machine but it had logged off due to 30 minutes of inactivity (stupid Windows, why would you do that if the guy has no password on his user account?) and when I logged back in the log was gone. I restarted the machine and FAH opened up but still the log was blank. DAMN YOU WINDOWS.

His log now has filled up. It's a predictable repetition.

To check, put this url in your browser
http://www.stanford.edu/~pande/Win32/AMD64/Core_a4.fah
and see if the file downloads.

File does download on my machine, I could download it at my professor's but I wouldn't know how to use it. From what I was reading on some instruction page earlier, apparently I have to hex-edit it so it becomes a .bz file? o.0

schertt wrote:same problem as 7im, same thread.

My problem (or my professor's, rather) is not the same as 7im's, his core is A3 and his log shows an error message whereas my professor's just loops the "downloading" part.

I'd look hard at the security software on those machines, whether it's a firewall, an antivirus, or antispyware.

If your browser can download the xxx.fah file and the FAH software cannot, there's something blocking the FAHClient from getting the file through your security software.

The browser can't use that file; it needs to be downloaded by the client, but the client is just acting like another browser, but one that isn't allowed to do the downloading.

News: I have installed FAH on two more computers, in the same computer lab as other two computers I was already testing FAH on, and in a completely different building than my professor's office. The cores also refuse to download on those, despite they downloading sucessfully on the two test machines a few days ago. I'll ask the tech guys if there's some sort of faculty-wide firewall that suddenly decided to dislike FAH for whatever reason.

I have also disabled the Avast! antivirus on this machine and see what it does. The log is:

Edit: Disabling Avast! didn't work! It truly must be a server or firewall between this machine and the outside world that is blocking it.

such a shame to see so many users get dead-ended by this problem with no solutions. Waste of a dedicated quad-core folding machine.

I count 3 users so far. Let's not exagerate too much. ;)

Not sure what happened in your setup, but looking at your config, it seems that something is missing... I don't see any folding slots.

10:03:42:<config>
10:03:42: <!-- User Information -->
10:03:42: <user v='schertt'/>
10:03:42:
10:03:42: <!-- Folding Slots -->
10:03:42:</config>

Uninstall the client, keeping your data. Then reinstall the client and let the installer add the slot or slots for you.

We should see something like smp=true and or gpu=true in the config.
