Flash and video freezes when folding with GPU

Postby ABBAS » Mon Aug 13, 2012 7:32 am

hi,

I am folding using GTX 460 1GB overclocked to 840 Mhz & i5-2500k 4.4 Ghz .
Using latest driver for the GPU "301.42" .
Folding using "FAHControl 7.1.52" .
Latest Version for Fire Fox , Chrome and Adobe flash player.

When I watch any video the browser freeze , I have used Fire Fox and Chrome . The same when I play any flash game or anything using flash.
Also any video player hangs when i open any video on my PC like (VLC , AllPlayer ,Classic Media Player except Windows Media Player).
BTW the problem happen also with my old AMD processor and the same GPU.

The problem disappear when I stop only the GPU client.

I recall as the flash video GPU based acceleration clashing with the FAH GPU client and disabling flash "hardware acceleration" fixed that issue, but it was a long time ago. Also, I am not sure if regular players are dealing with the GPU at all, so you have a different issue at your hands I think.

If possible then try to change video drivers.

There are a number of areas to check when troubleshooting Flash problems:

1. Disable Hardware Acceleration:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/891337

2. Firefox Options:

Tools > Options > Advanced > General

Remove checkmark from "Use hardware acceleration when available"

3. Check Firefox plugins

Tools > Add-ons > Plugins

Above the list of plugins "Check to see if your plugins are up to date"

4. Possible malware

Use Malwarebytes free scanner to check for malware

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

5. Flash uninstaller

http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/ ... ndows.html or
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Unin ... ler.shtml/

6. Downgrade Flash in Firefox

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes

7. Disable Protected Mode - see "Last resort" near bottom of page

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071?tstart=0

Some of the above may involve restarting Firefox.

If none of these work then a clean install of the current or previous drivers may be necessary.

Use Driver Sweeper to remove all traces of the display drivers ... careful to remove just display drivers (i.e. do not remove chipset drivers)

http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

Install the latest drivers. If the problem still exists repeat the procedure and install a previous version. One of the older drivers known to work well with the GTX460 and folding is 285.62.

There may be other causes for freezing but the above will usually help.

If anyone has other ideas please post them and I will update this list.

Have you tried out 'Who Crashed' utility. It is free and handy, giving you a snapshot of crash and the possible cause.
http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

This is a very common fault I've had on streaming or anything else pushing video -and reinstalling the driver seems to cure the problem.
Output follows:-
Bugcheck code: 0x100000EA (0xFFFFFFFF892495B0, 0xFFFFFFFF8A538EB8, 0xFFFFFFFFF78CACBC, 0x1)
Error: THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M
file path: D:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\nv4_mini.sys
product: NVIDIA Compatible Windows 2000 Miniport Driver, Version 270.61
company: NVIDIA Corporation

It may be helpful to use Nasty File remover with care- http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=582

You could try using madVR in MPC HC, with "fullscreen exclusive mode" enabled. That was the only solution that helped me. Also, you could try enabling D3D Fullscreen mode when using EVR renderer, but in that case you will not be able to use the GUI.
Unfortunately, madVR is in some cases complicated to setup, try this guide: http://www.homecinema-hd.com/madvr_en.html.

I have to admit, whenever I get any GPU-lag issues for a specific task I just pause the GPU client and then start it back up when the task is done. That includes playing games but also to a lesser extent playing videos in my browser. I've fiddled around with a variety of GPU acceleration settings trying to disable them in flash and my browser (Chrome) and never found the right collection of disabled settings that eliminates video stuttering.

Yes that's what I've been doing as well. I've never found a proper solution.

Dr. Pande mentioned that he's been thinking about a GPU screensaver, so maybe we'll see that one day: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=21367&start=15#p213602

something totally remove the browser freezing

I just deleted the browser data which is in

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla

but before I have saved all my passwords with Last pass add-ons and my bookmarks with Xmarks.

the browser now is faster then before .. but still have problem with the player, I will search for a solution.

I've heard that apparently Firefox and Flash are somewhat not playing nice together, and that it can occasionally cause the GPU to freeze up or its driver to bomb out.
