Unable to recieve 70xx or 10xxx WUs

Postby $ilent » Tue Oct 02, 2012 5:28 pm

I have my V7 client set up on a VM running ubuntu 10.10. For some reason I can never pick up any 70xx units, such as 7002 or 10xxx WUs. I only recieve 8049 and such work units. I have my config set up as follows:

Code: Select all
<config>
  <!-- Configuration file created by FAHClient on 2012-09-13T20:45:53Z -->
  <user value='$ilent'/>
  <team value='37726'/>
  <passkey value='xxxxxx'/>
  <smp value='true'/>
  <gpu value='false'/>
  <!-- Remote Command Server -->
  <command-allow v="xx.xxx.xx"/>
  <command-allow-no-pass v="x.xx.xxxx"/>
  <command-port v="36330"/>
  <checkpoint v='3'/>

  <!-- FahCore Control -->
  <checkpoint v='30'/>
  <core-priority v='low'/>

  <!-- Folding Slot Configuration -->
  <cpus v='8'/>

  <!-- Logging -->
  <verbosity v='1'/>

  <!-- Network -->
  <proxy v=':8080'/>

  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='0' type='SMP'/>
</config>

I have tried bigadv, advanced client types and using big packet sizes too all to no avail. Anyone got any ideas?

thanks

You get connected to the work server the Assignment server selects for you. The algorithms used by the assignment servers are only known to the PG. Adding bigadv or big packet sizes will not make much difference if your machine can not process bigadv, and all SMP projects are considered "big" for assignment purposes.

One possibility is that you are blocked from using port 8080 to connect to the servers. The WS for 70nn and 100nn projects only accepts connections using port 8080, if you are connecting by port 80 you will not get assigned to 129.74.85.15.

so what your saying is I could possibly be blocked from connecting to port 8080? How do I change that please?

That could be your ISP, or if you are in a corporate environment it is blocked by some. You would have to contact them about that.

If you can open http://assign3.stanford.edu:8080 from your browser, port 8080 is not blocked. If FAH cannot open it because your business or university proxy blocks it, FAH will revert to http://assign4.stanford.edu:80 and proceed from there. To unblock port 8080, you'll have to talk to the administrators of the proxy, but it probably is a waste of time especially since port 80 is almost as useful.

FAH prefers port 8080 but will work with port 80. All work servers accept port 8080 connections and can be assigned by assign3. Some servers do not accept connections on port 80 and you won't get WUs from them through assign4.

I can connect to that internet address fine.

Is there any other reason I cant get the decent WUs? I also find Im getting really low ppd on my setup, I have my 2700k at 4.8ghz and fast memory but I barely manage 20,000ppd most of the time?

For instance a friend of mine of a 7808 WU manages to get just under 40,000ppd on his 2600k at 4.8ghz. I only get 22,000ppd on my 2600k at 4.8ghz, even though we both have the same setup.

First, different projects are worth different points. Second, do you and your friend load your systems in the same way? What do they do besides fold? Third, you are running a client via VM, he/she may be running native. All of these items, and others, could make a big difference as well. :)

What Mac said. It only takes one program using up all or part of a thread on the cpu to have a very large impact on folding speed. Things like anti-virus scanning when the computer is idle or other idle tasks could be bringing it down. You could just open task manager and see if the core is getting 99% or not(and if not what is else is using the cpu?).

For what its worth my 2600k @4.5ghz gets 30K ppd on the majority of projects then down around 20k for quite a few. A small number go up to 40k.Very few go higher-7024 will hit ~47k 7026 will hit up to ~56k. And you dont want the 10xxx units, they are all some of the 20k ppd ones on my system.

Those answers are technically correct but not the right answer for his and many others problem when it come to point discretions between projects and client choices, It is known that v7 will get mainly a4 projects and v6 will get mostly a3 projects currently if a person wants to maximise PPD they will be running native Linux and v6 of fah which will give you on an avg of about 25% more PPD on a daily basis. Running Linux a VM is only slightly better than running Windows running native Linux rather than windows will gain you about 15% then running a3 WU's will gain you another 10% to 15% on avg. This has been my personal experience with folding in the current times and WU selections.

2 - I7 980X 4.4Ghz 2-GTX680
1 - 2700k 4.4Ghz GTX680
Total = 464 cores folding
