Win98SE client in Virtual PC under Win XPsp3

Postby 19Grumpah42 » Tue Aug 25, 2009 2:05 am

I am having no problem running the Win 98SE uniprocessor CPU client (version 4.0.0) in my Virtual-98SE machines, sitting under Win XP sp3. Unlike the WinXP F@h versions (where the Display function crashes the processors), the Display function works nicely in both Win 98SE (slow enough to be a joke) and Virtual-Win 98SE. According to my log files, the virtual-98SE CPU client runs at about 60% the folding speed of the Win XP CPU client, perhaps because the (single) processor usage by MS-Virtual PC 6.0.192.0 wanders up and down 50-95% (no idea why)? I run nothing else on the Virtual-98 machine. This is a Core-2-Quad processor (Intel Q6600@2.40GHz) PC on an XFX nForce 680i LT M/B. I let both CPU clients access up to 100% CPU if they want. I clamp FahCore_78.exe to CPU 1, and Virtual PC-2007_SP1.exe to CPUs 2 or 3, which leaves plenty of host CPU for my other app.s [I also run the F@h GPU on the EVGA-NVIDIA 9500 GT, but that only occasionally uses 1% CPU.]
So using a Virtual-98SE machine (or two) seems to be a useful way to increase throughput on a quad-core -- although not as much as using multiple true up-to-date SMP clients - without having to learn about Linux or SMP installations (which suits me fine at the moment).

Honestly, use notfred vm image, or as a livecd in virtual machine... No linux setup, other than the webgui client setup.

Just a guess, but it's probably due to RAM limitations. When you start running VMs, you need a lot more real RAM than when you just run simple clients.

It is an ingenious suggestion, though.

Hm, could be. I freely confess I do not understand how Win XP handles RAM, and its pagefile. I have 2.GBy on this PC and I am looking at 900 MBy physical free as I run two Virtual-98SE machines, with a declared 4 GBy pagefile. It might seem silly to have two F@h virtuals using MS-Virtual PC because you can only run one instance of the Virtual Controller - so everything virtual is stuck on one CPU anyway - but in practice the Virtual PC controller now sucks 94- 98% of its CPU (which I allow) constantly, so I am hoping that two Virtual-98s F@h will be almost as fast as one XP CPU f@h job. Too early for me to tell right now. --G
