Core 7c doesn't work on ME?

Postby Furiey » Mon Apr 28, 2008 8:56 pm

I for my sins am still running my PC on Windows ME. I now use the 5.04 console client as I find this to be most stable, but I have tried v4 and have the same problem. My system has recently downloaded a WU that uses FahCore_7c.exe. The core is downloaded and engaged successfully, but when it tries to run I get a Windows message with an OK button to press:

Error Starting Program
The C:\PROGRAM FILES\FOLDING5@HOME\FAHCORE_7C.EXE file expects a newer version of Windows.
Upgrade your Windows version.

The system goes through a few tries to start the core with the same result, then tries downloading the core again with the same result, then eventually goes to sleep.

I have tried restarting, but get the same result, I tried going back to the v4 version (I still have it installed as I was not sure when I installed 5.04 if it would work so installed it as Machine ID 2 in another directory) with the same result.

Is there a way around this with ME so I can get this PC (1.7GHz P4) folding again? I don't want to spend money on a new Windows as I want that money (and Windows) to go towards a new PC.

Looks like a Pande Group mistake. I think 7c was only supposed to only go out to v6.x clients.

I'll ask...

Also, to avoid problems in the future, you will want to change USE IE SETTINGS to NO

Hi, all. We've restricted the jobs requiring this core to machines that are Win XP. Let me know if this happens again from this point on forward. This hadn't come up before in this (or in core 7b) since there are so few P4 Win2K machines out there!

Or WinME, which is what is actually causing the problem! :)

Thanks,

I had to delete the queue to make it get another WU but it is now off and running on core 81.

I notice you mention core 7b as well, I have one of those downloaded and haven't got errors before so I would guess that 7b ran OK.

This core does not work with WIN98se either. I have a PC that has been stuck trying to start the 7c core to no avail. I have tried to delete it and it keeps coming back saying I need to upgrade my windows.

Hello n8crwlr, welcome to the forum.

Are you using a v4 client, or v5, v6?

Stop the client. Assuming you have uploaded all completed work units, you can delete the work folder and the queue.dat file. Restart.

Hi mrshirts! Thought I'd make this my bizarre first post  The Win98 machine in my office picked up something requiring core 7c last night, so I wanted to let you guys know. Will do the recovery from this thread unless you need any info or whatever from me. Thanks much for the help!

Likewise my WinME picked up 7C today and promptly died. Will clear out and restart it.

Looks as if something got clipped in the assignment server if this is happening again, being as this thread started up in April. :?

Cheers. :)

I've passed this info along to Prof. Michael Shirts (who is in charge of Gromacs core development in FAH) and he will look into this one.

Yes, a new entry was created in the server without the proper restriction. I've added it back in. Core 7c is due to be retired in the near future (3-6 months, likely, as soon as the modifications in this core are added into Gromacs 4.0), and so we'll keep with just restricting the server for now, and make sure it's properly addressed in the next core at a more fundamental level.

You want W2k or W2k3 on a P4. I can easily start up one. I earlier this year de-commissioned all my P4's and X2's (7 machines). At the moment, they are just sitting around doing nothing and now that it is getting cold out side, I was considering folding for heat. I use Electricity for heat and a watt is a watt regardless of if it comes from a baseboard heater or a computer.
