Any tricks to restarting?

Postby suncoast » Mon Jan 28, 2008 5:52 pm

I installed GUI 4.0 on a Win98 system in October. It ran fine until about a month ago. It successfully completed 12 WU's. Apparently, it has been trying to complete the same WU since Dec 10th. According to the logs, I have gone as far as 97% complete. However, when I shut the system down or reboot, it reverts back to 1% complete and starts over. If I exit and restart the client, it is ok. I'm thinking I may need to either suspend or exit the client before I reboot? System is a stable custom ASUS w/Athlon 2400 and just under 1GB Ram. Drive is SMART monitored and shows no physical defects. AV was up to date until vendor stopped supporting on Dec 31 07.

It is running:

Hello suncoast, welcome to the forum.

You will need to change this setting... [22:48:38] - Use IE connection settings: Yes

On the connection tab, make sure to uncheck the boxes for Use IE and for Proxy. Then restart the client. Should fix you right up.

Microsoft released some security patches that blocks the use of that setting. It's not needed anyway. The default setting of NO works for most people. Fold on.

There have been some shutdown improvements since Version 4 (and since Windows 98) but until you decide to upgrade your system, there's not much you can do. Even with the latest hardware and the latest software, work is sometimes lost when people shut down and/or crash.

About the only suggestion I can make is to be sure you give your system plenty of time to complete the shutdown process. (If power is lost, the probability of data loss is much higher.)

PLEASE: do not feel that I'm denigrating your system in any way. The FAH projects are thankful for ALL contributions.

I understand and appreciate the comment. If the system was not crunching WU's, it would be collecting dust in storage. And crunching WU's is not worth the $$ to buy XPP.

If you're using the machine for web browsing or other windows applications, then continue as you are. If it's exclusively for folding, you might consider one of the liveCD implementations of Linux. I started doing that to my older machines when the harddrives started to give trouble. You really don't need to learn Linux Once you set it up, it doesn't matter anyway.

For future reference, I have stopped losing data by implementing 7im's parameter change and by exiting the folding client prior to shutdown.

FWIW I was simply shutting down or restarting and losing my work.

I love Linux! I've been using Slackware for over a decade now.

Thanks Everyone!
