low ppd on all workunits

Post by PrimordialSoup »

Hi, I would like to figure out why I have low ppd on wu and if the problem is on my end and fix it if possible.

setup:
supermicro x10drl-i with latest bios(1.1)
32gb crucial ddr4 rdimm 2133mhz
e5-2680 v3
ubuntu x64 14.04.2

Right now I am folding a 9007 wu and i'm getting 11000 ppd with 8 logical cpu configuration. By comparison I have a 2630 v3 on another setup that get 27500 ppd with the same 8 logical cpu configuration. The 100 Mhz clock delta cannot account for the wide ppd difference. Futhermore, I have another 2680 v3 running running with 15 cpus and it gets about 47000 ppd on the same 9000 series wu.

I have tried other configurations including 22 cpu, 2x 11 cpus running a4 core, a3 core, a5 core and all of them not getting above 28000 ppd. All setups are using same os.

If you require more information from me please let me know.
Thank you.

Welcome to foldingforum.org, PrimordialSoup.

According to the official stats, PrimordialSoup has only completed one WU and it was quite some time ago. Do you fold under a different name? Do you have a qualified passkey?

Are you using the same UserName and the same passkey?

Running 11 cpus is NOT recommended, and 22 is probably also equally undesirable.

If you post your log, we'd be better able to help you. (See below)

I am not using the same id as the forum. I have validated passkey for QRB.

Code: Select all

Re: low ppd on all workunits

Post by bruce »

Are your machines dedicated or are they running a significant amount of other work?

FAH will not perform well if whatever number of CPUs you allocate to FAH keep getting interrupted by other tasks.

My machines are what I would consider dedicated. The first 2630 is my file server and backup machine running f@h at 15 cpus. I occasionally stream video or get files from the machine but it doesn't impact performance as I run fahcontrol and monitor the clients. The other 2630 is a htpc machine running f@h currently with 8 cpus. I used to run it at 15cpus but because of heat issues I reduce the number of cpus until I can get a better htpc chassis that will fit in my furniture. I was getting the same ppd as the backup and file server machine while watching youtube, netflix or local video. The 2680 I have recently setup has not been used for any other task but I plan to use it as a programming enviromment in the future. I have halted the system after I noticed the low ppd (the wu were run long enough to let the ppd stabilize) to tinker with the uefi. At the time I believed that an incorrect setting was diminishing the processing power(TDP settings, cpu, memory, ras, etc).

edit: now getting 28700 ppd on 7812 wu 23 cpus at 83% done

Please turn the verbosity setting back down to the default of 3. The extra text only makes finding the needed info harder. Thanks.
