PPD Issue on Mac OS X 10.10

Post by lelliott731 »

I have a 2011 27" iMac with the Core i7 2600K processor, I'm running the 7.4.4 client, and I'm getting around 7,100ppd on a 9752 WU.

This seems low to me, but I've been out of the folding game for a while now.

Any thoughts?

That does sound a bit on the low side, my iMac with a 2.8 GHz i7 averages around 12,000 PPD. However, that is with all 8 virtual cores in use by folding, and nothing else taking any significant amount of CPU time.

First, the default settings for the 7.4.4 client uses a Medium setting. That reserves one core for other uses. Some projects will run and use 7 cores effectively, while others will either reduce the core count to 6 or not get assigned to systems with a 7 setting. You can try a setting of Full and use all 8 cores and see what is reported for a PPD after a few percent of progress.

The other thing I would check is the openings for the cooling passages. If they get partly blocked by dust or lint that would affect cooling of your CPU. The protective circuits could then kick in and reduce the CPU clock to prevent overheating.

Do you know what a healthy temperature is for this system? I have a SSD installed, so I needed to run MacFanControl, which takes up like 13% of the CPU usage, which is crazy high I think.

Does smcfancontrol work in 10.10? I have used that in the past and it did not seem to use that much CPU time. I am still on 10.9.5, so have not kept track of its current state of development.

An alternative to using software is a replacement thermal sensor cable. OWC sells one, either with tools for opening an iMac or just the sensor. I have not used one yet, so have no direct knowledge of its quality. Just was interested in it in case I have to replace the drive in my 2009 iMac.

In any case, if the MacFanControl app is using that much CPU, that would imbalance any run of F@H using all 8 cores, and might even affect at 7. A setting of 6 might work better.
