Dual 20 Core xeons only one being utilized.

Post by Kevincav »

So I'm trying to run Fah on my 2 20 core / 40 thread xeons. I set up 4 different cpu slots (20 threads each) and they all appear to be working. The only issue I see is that task manager only shows 100% work on one cpu. The other one is barely being touched. Has anyone else had this problem before / how I should go about fixing it?

Kevincav.
Your operating system should be taking care of this. If you could post the first 100 lines or so of your FAH log, it may help us determine the issue.

Is your Windows or Linux maybe not updated? And a later update would fix it?

uninstalling folding@home and then downloading the latest version and installing it fixed it for me on june 2015. on another topic, download qwikmark and use it to measure the flops count of your devices for posterity.

Sorry for the delay, I've been having fun with reinstalling windows a few times today. I set it up in a way that worked temporary but eventually settled back down to 40 threads. Here's the log I had from after the reset.

Why are you changing the configuration? Set it and forget it.

You cut off the first three dozen lines of the log. I'd like to see how your hardware is reportedly set up.

Yeah, I think that was already out of the current set of logs by then. Here you go. Also I keep changing it because it's almost like it's ignoring the hyper threads. So I can't just say go on 80 threads, it limits me to 32 threads per each slot.

Code: Select all

I have not looked into the details of the various Windows 10 versions that MS sells, but older versions required use of the server version to use more than 32 threads. There were also limitations on the number of cores recognized, though I understood that was supposed to change.

One thing that is telling:

Code: Select all

05:00:34: CPU: Genuine Intel(R) CPU 0000 @ 2.00GHz
Your CPU's are not being recognized for what type of chip they are. As I recall, that information is read by the OS and passed onto the client. Is the BIOS or UEFI up to date on your logic board?

Yeah, I updated everything on this pass. The weird thing is that not every other program recognizes it either. Linux seems to though, so I might bump everything over there.

that kind of problem has to be submitted in both intel forums and irc followed by windows forums and irc.

Is the mainboard chipset drivers and cpu drivers in Windows up to date? How many cores physical and logical are shown in msinfo32?

Are those chips from eBay or similar and potentially "extra spicy" ? Any screenshot from CPU-Z ? Wonder if the steppings from both CPU support multi processing.

CPUs correct in socket ? Power cable for second CPU attached ? Does the BIOS show both CPUs ?

1) Your OS recognizes that your CPU has 32 threads, counting HyperThreading if it happens to be enabled in the BIOS. FAHClient shouldn't allow you to enable more that that -- and if you did, performance would go DOWN. WIndows 10 Pro has a built-in limitation but I don't remember what it is. Perhaps it's 32.

2) Folding projects are designed for systems with an allowable range of CPUs. One of the development projects for the beta FAHClient is to do a better job of managing those CPUs, those limitations, and the assignment of the best possible project. Last time I checked, there were no projects that could be assigned to all 32 of your CPUs. I think there are several for CPU:24 and maybe a few that use CPU:27. This will vary from time to time.

The released version will simply not assign a project if you ask for 32 and none are available. Once software with the new capabilities are released, if you ask for 32, it will assign a project that uses the hugest available CPU count.. Once CPU is reserved for each CPU and sInce you have a GPU, the maximum you can use is (at least) one less than whatever is found. That leaves 31, which is an unstable number which is always excluded.

I'd probably enable two slots: CPU:24 and CPU:6, leaving one for the GPU and one for whatever else is happening. [My Windows 10 system seems to be using a lot of overhead, so you probably shouldn't even try to enable that last CPU.]

This can all change, of course, if you install an OS which enables all of you hardware {40 xeon threads] but you'll need to reallocate then.
