FAHcore 0x21 slows down Windows/NVidia PC

Post by Fobus »

Everything is fine with other types of core (it's mainly 0x18), but with 0x21 everything on my system just becomes slow and laggy. Any way to restrict which core type i'm folding?

My system specs:
gtx980, 4790k

If you've set client-type to Advanced or Beta, remove that setting. If you still have problems, report which WU it is.

Setting idle=true in the GPU slot can help, too.

Please post the information mentioned in my sig.

We need to see the log, it might also be the slowdown bug that leads to bad states detected on GPU ...

I don't know how to check for client-type. If it wasn't set so by default, i don't remember setting it myself.
I set idle=true in gpu slot, but if i understand this correctly, all that this does is idle the folding while PC is in use? I spend a lot of time in front of PC, that's not really an option for me.
I'm on 0x21 again, it's laggy again, even using windows explorer is noticeably slower, especially since i'm on SSD.
WU info: PRCG 9704 (25, 9, 99)

Btw, i removed CPU folding slot. Since i use mainly CPU, and GPU is mostly free when i'm not gaming.

with 0x18 i can even do light gaming, like hearthstone. With 0x21 i can't even browse the web, it's really bad. I have set folding power on Medium.

Re: FAHcore 0x21 slows down my PC

The GPU has no operating system to guide it so it has no no sense of priority. The processing required to update the position of the mouse pointer or to echo typed characters on the screen often has to wait for the current FAH compute block to finish -- making updating the screen extremely sluggish. Moving the mouse SHOULD interrupt FAH's GPU processing by having priority, but no such capability exists. The mouse moves quickly only when the GPU is mostly idle hence the recommendation to set idle=true.

There are individual settings in the OS, in your browser, in your video player, etc. which lets you choose whether to use either the GPU or the CPU for screen rendering. They're often called "disable accelerated rendering" or something like that if you want to use your CPU instead. That often helps because the rendering processing CAN get priority on your CPU. Even though an idle GPU would be faster than an interrupted CPU, it's the lack of being able to interrupt the GPU that really matters.

That applies to all GPU and CPU processing. Core_21 is more efficient than Cores_17/_18 so those WUs are more difficult to interrupt.

setting idle is almost the same as pausing for me. It could fold for a few minutes there and here, but that just means i'm not folding core18 when i do use my PC. It would be really nice to have an option to choose which core type to fold, in addition to choosing particular disease. If nothing can be done about core_21, that is.

Each project is developed around a particular FahCore. The projects that are assigned to your client are determined by Stanford, based on the characteristics of your hardware plus certain settings that you can make (such as client-type). You cannot select a specific core.

Core_21 projects are not identical. Which projects have you had trouble with. Are any acceptable? It may be possible to limit certain projects, say just those larger than K atoms or something like that. No such limitation is available today.

It's likely that once a final version of core_21 is released, new projects will no longer be released for core_17 or _18, but that shouldn't change whatever is associated with the lags you've observed (including those which you consider insignificant) or the ultimate performance of proteins similar to the ones you're currently running on _18.

To me, what Fobus is desribing is the slowdown bug : when the frames start to take an hour long, and before a bad state is detected, the UI might be terrible sluggish.

Windows or Linux?

Include system configuration from the log or from the System Info tab.

Bruce,

I paused and rebooted to get the configuration into the log. I don't know how to paste an image of the client system information into the forum.

Re: FAHcore 0x21 slows down Windows/NVidia PC

By using the setting <client-type v='beta'/> you have chosen to receive assignments which have a significantly higher probabilty of having problems. Removing that setting will probably fix a significant percentage of the problems you're reporting. See my instructions in my first post (above).

According to the last log you posted, You're running one Core_18 WU and one Core_21 WU. When project 9704 finishes, it's unlikely that you will be assigned another Core_21 WU.

Bruce,

I happily accept sluggish video response to support core/project development. 95% of my computer usage is folding and beta testing. Should I have reported the noted behavior on the beta team thread even though the project is now released? Was this inappropriate? I am stating for observational purposes only that this project causes some sluggishness of video in my machine when running on the card that I use for my video monitor. It is rather minor, but it is there. I can live with it. By far, most core 21 projects do not have the noted sluggishness.
