Can't run core 21

If you think it might be a driver problem, see viewforum.php?f=79

Can't run core 21

Post by debs3759 »

I just started folding again after stopping for the summer. I had no problems previously running two GPU slots or core 21. I am now unable to run core 21. Initially it said openCL.dll was missing, so I placed a copy in my system32 directory. It then gave an unknown error. I reinstalled the client, and got the same error. Deleted FahCore_21.exe and restarted. Installer latest video driver from NVidia. Still no joy.

Any idea what might be wrong?

Re: Can't run core 21

My guess (and it may be wrong) is that Windows10 decided it wanted to update your GPU drivers. When they do, OpenCL support gets broken. Then, when you manually tried to fix it, you probably didn't include the OpenCL version that should have been included with the new version of the NVidia drivers.

Check the GPU driver version listed in GPU-Z or, if you dig deep enough, in the Windows Device Manager. Remove the opencl.dll that you installed. Go to nvidia.com and install their version of the same driver. As far as FAH is concerned, you can un-check the optional features except for the driver -- though you may want one or more of them.

I'd confirm that works before upgrading to a newer version (if there is one). You have to select a version that supports both of your GPUs, though most will do so.

It's currently folding on core 0x18 with both GPUs, and that found a usable copy of opencl.dll. I'm downloading the lates video drivers from NVidia (previous update was the GeForce experience). I have deleted the openCL.dll that I manually installed, and will see what happens after I install this version of the drivers, once current 0x18 wus end.

The new driver install added OpenCL.dll where expeccted, so has hopefully fixed it.

Downloading the drivers from NVidia instead of letting GeForce Experience install then fixed it, I now have FahCore 0x21 running. Surprised that GeForce Experience update didn't fix it.

That surprises me, too.

The missing openCl.dll has been blamed on Windows Update but this is the first time that I've seen it blamed on Geforce Experience. I'm not sure that there's an easy way to tell which one actually did the update to your drivers. I'm pretty confident than neither one will re-update them if the other one has already done it.

It was originally broken by Windows update sometime over the summer when I wasn't folding. GFE didn't fix it, but also didn't break it. No idea where I found the dll file I tried to fix it with.

I've been getting something similar with my GTX 970, except mine has been sometimes crashing the video driver and reporting BAD WORK UNIT.
Mine stopped working around the same time, but my buddy has an exactly identical system that runs fine.

Perhaps the same issue? If so, where do I find a copy of that DLL?

@cparkervt If you see the following error in your log

Code: Select all

04:52:41:WU02:FS01:0x21:ERROR:exception: Error downloading array interactionCount: clEnqueueReadBuffer (-5)
Then your problem is unrelated to the missing DLL for OpenCL reported here. What it does mean is that you recently updated to one of the version 375 or 376 drivers from nVidia. They apparently managed to break part of the OpenCL implementation, these drivers do not work with Core_21 projects. The latest version of the driver reported to work is 373.06.

A blog message about this has been posted by PG, there is a topic here following the issue.

Thanks Joe! I must have not been typing the right secrets into Google because I've been fighting with this for awhile. :\
