Slow Folding and Graphical Issues

Post by PrinceDracus »

I've run into the slow folding issue before, but this time it seems I can't fix it through any means I've tried. All I'm capable of doing is a complete clean re-install of the FAH client and data, which doesn't do anything. I also noted plenty of graphical issues with the client that progress and get worse the longer it is open until the program is unusable. Restarted the program only fixes it very temporarily with minor graphical issues at the start.

I'm running on a NVIDIA GTX 1080TI Extreme Aurous and an overclocked Intel i7 8700k, although this issue is mainly for my gpu; I only use my GPU for folding, I find using the CPU isn't worth the minor 20k~ points for the major lag when multitasking.
The CPU is overclocked to 4.8GHz and is stable.
Very fast ethernet. I'm using a college campus connection so I'm unsure of the specifics, but I know it's fiber optic internet.
I have 16 GB of ram running at 3600MHz.
I'm using a Windows 10 OS.

I have screenshots, but I can't seem to post them here directly from my desktop, so I'll provide those later by request if necessary.

Posting a copy of a log I ran for a short time:

My rigs are on Linux so I can't say from my own experience but I've seen several times here that there is a problem with the default theme in windows. If you are using that you might try changing it.

I can't speak to the slow folding you report. But if you are not going to fold on your CPU, please either set it so it is paused on start so no WU will be downloaded or delete the CPU folding slot. The last will dump the current WU, and inform the servers so it can be assigned to someone else. Otherwise it will sit on your system until the deadline is reached, and will not be reassigned until the preferred timeout is reached.

21:52:48:WARNING:WU00:FS00:AS lowered CPUs from 11 to 10
The GPU requires one free CPU thread to manage data, which is why your log starts out with 11 CPUs which is later reduced to 10.
I also noted plenty of graphical issues with the client that progress and get worse the longer it is open until the program is unusable.
Do not leave FAHControl running. It's okay to open it when you wish to modify settings, but then close it. The processing of WUs is managed by FAHClient.ext and FAHControl.exe or WebControl are just for the GUI -- plus there have been some reports of memory leaks, which is probably consistent with the comment I quoted.
I only use my GPU for folding, I find using the CPU isn't worth the minor 20k~ points for the major lag when multitasking
.
Well, what else is using your GPU? You're obviously using SOMETHING to render your desktop. Lags are most often due to contention for the GPU rather than the CPU, but anything is possible.

What else is using your CPUs (whatever you're calling "multitasking")? FAH expects to find some free CPU resources. You might want to fold with, say 6 CPUs, and leave at least one for the OS and one to drive the GPU and then then use no more than 4 for whatever you're calling multitasking. What does 'top' (or the equivalent) tell you when your system is busy?

My rigs are on Linux so I can't say from my own experience but I've seen several times here that there is a problem with the default theme in windows. If you are using that you might try changing it.
I changed the theme it worked perfectly, thank you. I hadn't seen that on other posts here (form what I looked through).

I'm just using my GPU because when I use my CPU while doing other things (mainly playing games that are CPU intensive), I find there is a noticeable performance drop on both ends. Normally, whatever the case, my GPU should be hitting around 800K per day when it's only doing 100k for some reason. If it works correctly, the GPU folding is more than enough for me to not have to fold with my CPU to get to my desired point level per month (I set a goal for each month of about 4 million points).

As of right now, it is still an issue. The graphics issue has resolved itself, but I am still having issues with the slow folding speed. Thank you.

You need to add a passkey to get the bonus points which should bump you into 1000k PPD. If you already have a passkey then enter it in the FAHControl settings. If not you can get one from here

Holy crap I forgot this, thanks a lot. Not sure why it wasn't working before I reinstalled, as I had this issue and a had a passkey.

My guess: Either you didn't enter the passkey, or you changed the spelling. (Or maybe you created a new user name)-

If you fold with a new passkey (or a new user name), you have to complete 10 WUs with than new passkey-user combination before bonus points start to be awarded.
