Nvidia 296.10 WHQL drivers fail
I just tried the new Nvidia 296.10 (WHQL) drivers, and they crashed my GT 240 after folding for less than two hours. That is just what the 295 series drivers did, so they don't seem to be paying much attention to Folding at Nvidia. I won't even try them now on my Fermi cards, but will go back to 290.53.

Successfully folding for almost two hours before failing is rather strange.
It might be a problem with overheating, but it also might be the known problem with the power-saving features. Do you have your power-savings setting cofigured to "turn off the monitor" after some time?

The monitor is always set to turn off after 15 minutes, but I think the failure occurred after that, maybe right at the end of the work unit, but I didn't check that in the log. It has never been a problem with any of the previous drivers, so if that is it, then it is an Nvidia bug insofar as I am concerned. (The card runs at a cool 54C with a case fan blowing right on it, so that is not it. It will fold OK up to 80C or more.)
But I always install only the graphics drivers, not any of the other components. Someone mentioned that the 295 drivers worked for them with the 3D drivers installed, so I will try that next. Maybe Nvidia has moved around some components that the Folding core needs? I will know in an hour or two.

No, the next run failed too even with all the Nvidia components installed. It seems to complete OK and upload the results, then give an "unstable machine" error. Here is the log if anyone is interested.

The CUDA driver is 4020. The same as in the previous 295 drivers that failed. I'm sticking with the 285.62 drivers (CUDA 4010) until a new version comes out.

From your log, the failure is right at the start of a WU. See http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 95#p209065 for a discussion of this on recent NVidia drivers (I don't use these versions myself, so I'm only offering you the links). What seems to be happening is that, using the monitor off functions, folding fails at the start of a new WU, just as you are seeing. - Power Management Mode: Prefer Maximum Performance (I usually have it set that way, but had not done so with the new drivers yet).
CUDA - GPUs: GeForce GT 240 (in order to exclude the GT 430, which is the display card that drives the monitor)

I doubt that the black-screen screensaver saves as much power as going into power-down mode. The curious part is that Nvidia has not caught it themselves. If you don't like the blank screen saver (I don't like screen savers at all), why don't you simply turn the screen of using the button ?

At least this problem is not as bad as the previous one ... do you remeber how many people lost their GPU when nVidia provided drivers that failed to drive the card fan ?
