GTX770, Linux - < 50% utilization

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GTX770, Linux - < 50% utilization

Post by csvanefalk »

UPDATE: As has been pointed out by several posters, the percentage displayed by nvidia-smi is most likely the fan utilization, NOT the GPU itself. My bad. For now I am looking to get the maximum efficiency out of the GPU itself.

I just recently returned to folding, and discovered that GPU folding on Linux is finally natively supported.

I am trying to get my GTX770 to fold - all is working fine, but nvidia-smi shows the GPU as being (seemingly) underused:

Code: Select all

+------------------------------------------------------+
NVIDIA-SMI 331.67     Driver Version: 331.67

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Compute processes:                                               GPU Memory

   0            Not Supported
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

My config is vanilla, the only change was to disable the CPU slot. The performance slider is also set to Full.

Code: Select all

  <!-- Folding Core -->
  <core-priority v='low'/>

  <!-- Folding Slot Configuration -->
  <gpu v='false'/>

  <!-- Logging -->
  <verbosity v='5'/>

  <!-- Network -->
  <proxy v=':8080'/>

  <!-- Slot Control -->
  <power v='full'/>

  <!-- User Information -->
  <passkey v='xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx'/>
  <user v='svanefalk'/>

  <!-- Folding Slots -->
  <slot id='1' type='GPU'/>
An initial thought was throttling due to temps (60C at 40% is pretty high). Another concern is that Compute Processes is not showing anything. Is that normal?

Apart from that, any ideas on how I can ramp it up?

For non GK 110 nvidia cards, drivers above 319.x and 325.x do not fold well with current core 17. There is a new core under beta testing for Windows that appears to solve the issue.

Since you are folding on linux I would recommend to install either 319.x or 325.15 (I am using this one on a dual GTX 770 Ubuntu 13.04 rig)

Please note that with 319.x or 325.15 you will need to reboot the computer every 36 hours to avoid the TDR bug of those drivers.

FYI, in your config.xml, you have this setting:
<!-- Logging -->
<verbosity v='5'/>

I would suggest that you change it to the default value of 3 since any higher value means that all default values will be printed in the log file which makes it harder to troubleshoot. With the default setting, only changed values will be printed in the log file which makes it easy to spot any changes and troubleshoot.

Again, the v55 beta core 17 uses a workaround for a problem in the NV driver. It should not be considered a "fix."

I think the display you have included is showing the fan at 43%. I don't see a figure for GPU utilisation. The nVidia X-server app lists GPU utilisation on the GPU page.

What PPD are you getting? (Final figure, or estimate after at least 5% of the WU is done)

If the card is not a GK110, then a pre-327 driver with regular reboots will help.

I must be missing something for the only numbers I see given below 50% is the GPU fan at 43%.

I am getting around 40k/day as of now, I assume that is reasonable?

Should I be concerned about CUDA not being found on the system?

CUDA is not used by Core17. However it should be installed with nVidia drivers. So it should be found. Where did you get the drivers from? Try getting a version direct from nVidia, one of the versions referenced above. And posting the full log (from the beginning to folding started) would help too.

Based on my experience, with proper drivers and Core 17 (with QRB), a GTX770 will get in average 90-95k PPD, depending on WU and project, it can actually vary between 78k and 124k PPD.

(edit : added information regarding the core)

The PPD can vary drastically depending on the individual project being folded. The best examples for your video card would be folding a QRB Core_17 WU which gives lots of bonus points for quick return and a Core_11 or Core_15 project that do not give bonus points. With folding running perfectly, I can easily see you getting 1/2 the normal Core_17 points by merely running a Core_15 project.

You have little control over what project you receive. It is just the luck of the draw and everyone is in the same boat in this respect.

But linux is core_17 only so something else is halving the ppd.

Core_17 typically requires a full cpu's utilisation - you've removed the CPU folding slot but is anything else compute heavy running?

Thanks to everyone for the replies and help so far. As has been pointed out by several posters, the percentage displayed by nvidia-smi is most likely the fan utilization, NOT the GPU itself. My bad. For now I am looking to get the maximum efficiency out of the GPU itself.

A small update: after letting the card chew away uninterruptedly for the last 12 hours, FAHControl is estimating 50k PPD (I am aware that FAHControl is not really the best way to estimate PPD, but its where I got the last value as well).

The drivers are from rpmfusion, I am running Fedora 20, and from what I can see that is the best way to get them. Normally I would be using Nouveau - I got the prop drivers to fold on the card.

Apart from my IDE running regular builds etc, nothing else is eating too much of the CPU. Top shows FahCore_17 occupying one of the cores constantly, so that should be alright.

Re: GTX770, Linux - < 50% utilization

Post by davidcoton »

You almost certainly need to get a driver from nVidia's website and figure out how to install it. You do NOT want Nouveau drivers.

Please set log verbosity back to default (3) asnd re-post as above, the extra information at 5 obscures changes from default and is rarely helpful.

As explained, I am not using Nouveau, I am using the 331.67 official drivers, installed via rpmfusion.

csvanefalk, as explained in this thread, the official drivers 327 and above do not yield best PPD for non GK110 GPU. Roughly, based on your figures, they deliver around 60% less folding performance for Core_17 units (my personal findings were around 50% less performance)
you have currently two options on linux :
- keep low ppd with 331.67, but no need to restart
- downgrade to 319.x or 325.15, that will boost your Core_17 PPD to 90-95k, but you will need to reboot at least every 36 hours

(edit : add non GK110 info + linux info)
