GTX 660 Ti underperforming and more

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GTX 660 Ti underperforming and more

Post by DownshiftArtist »

SO I recently replaced my 570 with a 660 Ti and I was having some issues at first with it folding slower than the 570, but I was later informed it was due to the driver. I was using the latest 340.X driver and only getting about 22K PPD compared to my 570's 40k PPD. I rolled the driver back to a recommended 327.23 and things were much improved until I got to 62% on a 1300x WU. For some reason it went back to 60% and then this happened:

Now, I'm slowly churning Core 15 WU and I'm not sure why. I even tried deleting my slots and reconfiguring them and still no change. The only other thing I can think of is maybe re-installing the client but I wanted to make sure there wasn't something else I missed. Thanks in advance.

Client - 7.3.6 (HFM update just came out today so I think I might try updating to 7.4.4 )
OS: Windows 7 Home Prem
GPU: MSi GTX 660 Ti
Flags: max-packet-size - normal

Receiving core 15 WUs does not indicate a problem. We a get them. Same with getting bad work units. But you may want to ask a mod to check on that WU.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this is the 6th or 7th "Bad WU" since upgrading my GPU which is getting really anonoying because they've all been huge 1300X WU's I haven't OC'd my GPU either. What really concerns me is the slow speed at which I'm going through the current WU's and the section of the log that states:

Code: Select all

Your return is the only one in the database so far and you did receive partial credit:

Hi DownshiftArtist (team 37726),
Your WU (P13000 R2194 C0 G45) was added to the stats database on 2014-09-03 21:03:43 for 10273.8 points of credit.

See this post for some possible reasons.

We will probably need to see the System Info and Config sections of your log before we can offer any more suggestions.

Yeah, I just noticed that I got partial for that one, but the previous ones, I think were an issue with my client; it was doing some really weird things at one point. such as the FAHClient.exe opening command prompt window and log that if I closed, would close the client.exe and somehow result in a lost WU, but below are the logs I have starting from the most recent, right before this WU failed

It seems to be a variety of causes for issues, all stemming from upgrading my GPU. Didn't have any of these problems with my 570

project:9406 run:933 clone:0 gen:52 ... your return is the only failure and someone was able to complete it successfully for full credit.

project:9406 run:107 clone:0 gen:108 ... the database shows two failures for this one but someone was able to complete it successfully for full credit.

You could try reinstalling the drivers and choosing Custom with a check next to the driver and Perform a clean install just to make sure there's nothing wrong with them. Have you used something like GPU-z to determine if both GPUs are being used or is it possible that both work units are using the same GPU? If you decide to install 7.4.4 again this time uninstall 7.3.6 including the data and let the installer for 7.4.4 set the indices for the GPUs.

In this order:

Uninstall 7.3.6 completely including data
Reinstall 327.23 drivers using Custom ... you can remove the check beside all except the actual driver and check the Perform Clean Install box ... reboot even if the installer doesn't tell you to do so ... check to ensure the correct drivers are being used
Install 7.4.4 and input your identity info ... if it doesn't setup both GPUs you can use the Config>Slot>Add but don't change any indices until it's determined that's necessary

If both GPUs are physically installed at the time of installing the drivers and FAHClient then the FAH installer usually identifies the GPUs correctly and there's no need for manually setting indices.

Okay, I'll try all of that then, and I do have GPU-Z and MSIAfterburner, however I've never had any FAHClient correctly identify my GPUs and indices since I've had 2. I even had to do a write up for 7.4.4 because of that issue and help a couple people with a similar problem. I think it's mobo related though. Anyway, I might try that tonight when I get home depending on how this current WU goes, and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks.

I got home last night and everything was "magically" working just fine. I didn't change anything, but now everything is working just fine and my 660 Ti is pushing through the way it supposed to......so I'm just ot going to touch my computer at all for a while. Thanks for the help everyone.
