Windows 10 [unsupported] Preview Fails nVidia GPU Core 17

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Windows 10 [unsupported] Preview Fails nVidia GPU Core 17

[This is a heads up from a beta team member, not a request for support.]

Windows Technical Preview (aka Windows 10 beta) runs client console 7.4.4 fine. CPU core A4 runs fine. GPU Core 17 fails with, for example:

clEnqueueReadBuffer is an OpenCL call to read data, and either can't read it, or it's corrupt data. A bad or missing OpenCL install can cause it, or too much overclocking, or a bad WU, or just a driver issue again... maybe using one not meant for this version of Windows as in this instance.

Windows 10 Technical Preview Fails nVidia GPU Core 17

Now my GPU is not folding because "FahCore_17.exe is missing from your computer". I believe the problem started about the same time Windows 10 was updated. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client many times and I didn't find any information on Google about manually installing the core 17.

Sounds like a problem with Windows 10. I don't think FAH supports that version yet -- indeed it is not fully released. Try the Microsoft channels :) Good luck -- you'll need it.

Probably a permissions problem. Did you try installing in C:\ProgramData instead of profile? (Install for All Users)

Just to be clear, are you saying the GPU was folding in Windows 10, and then Windows 10 did a Windows Update, and now the GPU won't fold? If yes, then Windows likely updated the video driver. You'll need to roll back that driver. But to be clear, Windows 10 is not a released product and not a supported OS.

Are you saying that you upgraded from Windows ? to Windows 10, and after the upgrade, the GPU won't fold? If so, then you are running an unsupported version of Windows, and your only options are to roll back to previous version of Windows, or wait for GPU drivers that work in Windows 10. BTW, the previous person to post about Windows 10 preview/beta said CPU folding worked, GPU folding did not. Hopefully that will change soon.

P.S. The fahcore is never missing. The next time the client starts, it will download a new copy. If still missing after that, then likely a permissions or installer issue in Win10. Installing Just For Me is the best option. If that doesn't work, trying the Install for All like Breach said.

Yes, both GPU and CPU were folding fine in Windows 10 for the first few weeks. Then late last week the GPU started failing while the CPU is still working fine. It was around the time Windows had an update, though I am not sure if it was a coincidence or the problem since I don't remember which came first. I do have a strong suspicion that the update caused it. I get a Windows style error window telling me that the core 17 .exe is missing immediately after I try to start GPU folding. I have tried both installing the client for myself and everyone. I will probably just wait patiently until the problem resolves itself or I could switch to Windows 7.
It would be nice if I could get the GPU to start folding so it could keep my apartment warm. ;-)

That's interesting. Good to know that the CPU works, but sorry to hear about the GPU problems. Windows 10 is a moving target, I wouldn't expect reliability of anything at this point in the game. Running things on it is a bit like running a cutting-edge Linux distro; things usually work, but they could also break with the next update. :)

Does the latest driver from AMD or NVidia (whichever is applicable) successfully install ... or does the driver being supplied with Windows 10 overwrite it?

FahCore_17.exe falsely reports as missing

Before I continue, a disclaimer: This environment is running under the Windows 10 Technical Preview 64-bit. I'm aware bugs are to be expected (CompSci major here, no need to yell at me for that), but this seems to be something that should be fixable with a bit of tweaking.

Upon execution of the GPU folding core for my Nvidia GPU, the client immediately reports that FahCore_17.exe is missing (I checked. It's not.) and the GPU folding slot stops while the CPU slot continues normally. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure what could be blocking the client's ability to see it's own core when it's precisely where it needs to be. (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient\cores\web.standford.edu\~pande\Win32\AMD64\NVIDIA\Core_17.fah\FahCore_17.exe for clarity's sake)

It doesn't seem to be a permissions issue as far as my troubleshooting has shown. Any suggestions or thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Sorry for the late response. I just downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Nvidia and it looks like everything is working now. Thanks for the help. :)

TallonRain, Try reinstalling your GPU drivers. I had they exact same problem but now it is working fine (though I am only getting Core 15 WU right now :ewink: ).
