Low PPD w/ Geforce GTX 560 Ti

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Low PPD w/ Geforce GTX 560 Ti

Post by volcomp1 »

Hi all, I recently purchased and installed a Geforce GTX 560 Ti and my PPD is far lower than I expected.

I read in several places that the PPD for the 560 should be around 30,000 PPD. Right now I'm getting ~1,800.

Here is my setup:
8-core i7-860 @ 2.80
4GB Ram
600W cooler master power supply
Gigabyte Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Linux Mint 17 64 bit

I've tried the following Nvidia drivers via the Linux Mint driver manager:
nvidia-331 recommended) -- version 331.113-0ubuntu0.0.4 -- Nvidia binary driver - version 331.113

nvidia-304 -- version 304.125-0ubuntu0.0.1 -- Nvidia legacy binary driver - version 30.125

nvidia-304-updates -- version 304.125-0ubuntu0.0.1 -- Nvidia legacy binary driver - version 30.125

There is also an nvidia-331-updates driver and an xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver that I can choose from.

There are otherwise no problems graphically and no errors in the folding logs. The GPU is otherwise "fine", just underperforming in terms of PPD.

I appreciate any help - thanks in advance!

After reading more, it seems to be a recurring thought that the 304 series Nvidia drivers are preferable for cards similar to mine. Specifically the 304.117 driver, for example in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=80&t=26803

Installing the "nvidia-current" package adds the 304.125 driver to my system. Unfortuantely, I can confirm that my GPU slot fails when running 304.125.

Here is the log for 304.125:

I have tried installing 304.117 from the Nvidia website. However, after completing the installation, I get error messages xorg configuration. Running "nvidia-xconfig" as the messages suggest does nothing to resolve the problem, and I am completely unable to load the X server GUI until I purge all nvidia packages from my system and re-install the nvidia-current pacakge.

I'm really struggling with this. Obviously, if my card is advertised as averaging 30k+ PPD, 1800 PPD is very disappointing. Also, I have two of these cards, and both bring about the same PPD and driver errors for 304.117.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you also had a look in this summary posting ? viewtopic.php?nomobile=1&f=80&t=27040

While for 90% I'm sure you are on the right track with driver issue please also make sure to have a passkey installed. This one also need to have finished in combination with your donor ID at least 10 WU to get QRB.

From driver side I think you could try until 327.23. viewtopic.php?f=38&t=27085&p=271957#p271957

I had a similar issue once I mixed 660TI with 780. I had to separate them.

OK thanks, what exactly do you mean separate them?

I also have 331.113 on this system, but I think I'm going to do a clean installation of Ubuntu Server and install the drivers manually from scratch as it has been giving me trouble to install them manually on Mint with these pre-installed drivers.

For the best performance, use a driver package with an NV driver 327.23 or less. 304.xx should be okay.

You will need to purge/uninstall other driver versions newer than that.

Often you need to install the OpenCL portion as well using repositories when not using the NV drivers directly.

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates nvidia-opencl-dev

Put the in different rigs, one with new cards and new driver, one into a system able to run older driver. Actually now the 660TI is benched, not folding anymore.

Tried installing opencl nvidia drivers, did a clean install of ubuntu server, did a clean install of ubuntu desktop, still stuck at 1700 ppd w/ a card that should be getting 37,000. If I don't install nvidia-current, I can't install any other nvidia drivers. If I install nvidia-current, it defaults to the 331 driver, even after manually setting it back to 304. Very frustrating.

Is it more straightforward with windows? I have a Windows 8 license from my university which I could use for this as well.

Also, I've entered a passkey. It boosted my CPU PPD from 1,500 to 9,500, but hasn't affected the GPU ppd.

That's going to depend on which projects you're assigned. Bonus points are not awarded to projects which use FahCore_15; QRB is awarded to projects which use FahCore_17 or _18.

Except core 15 and 18 are not assigned to linux clients at this time.

I've had best Ubuntu success with drivers d/l'ed from Nvidia's website -- IIRC you can select the version (I think there is a 327 for Linux) and it comes with a good installer that "just works" -- one or two questions but the answers are usually obvious. OpenCL is included. Downloads from Ubuntu repositories are not always as easy, particularly with older versions.

So what would be the exact process: 1) Install regular ubuntu desktop, 2) download and run the driver installer from nvidia's unix drivers website?

I tried the installer for 304.117 probably a dozen times and it didn't work. Like I said in an earlier post, ubuntu desktop came by default with the 331 driver and also the 304.125 driver. But when I specifically selected the 304.125 driver, it would automatically revert to the 331 driver the next time I opened the driver manager.

Any driver newer than 327.xx will run at half speed until either a fixed driver is released from NV. Or a patched FAHCore_17 is released for Linux like it was for Windows.

I have experienced repeated failures with step 2, but I've determined it's the desktop manager that's getting corrupted. (That shouldn't be a problem if you're running the server version.) Jesse_V has written a procedure on how to shut down X, install the drivers and then reconfigure the window manager so it works with the new drivers. I have not tried it.

Thank you. I tried this process step by step with the 304.117 driver. It seems to install correctly, but when I reset the grub settings and re-update the grub, I still boot into the CLI. When I restart lightdm (using Xubuntu, my preferred distro now), I just get an orange blinking cursor, but I can still press alt+left/alt+right to get back to the CLI. When I uninstall the GUI comes back.

I'll try another driver version but still unsolved.
