Nvidia 350.xx with opencl 1.2

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Nvidia 350.xx with opencl 1.2

Post by DemonfangArun »

just came across this today and installed it, sofar nothing appears to have broken from it and gtx960 is chewing through 10475s at same speed as it was before.
the big reason for me posting this is to see if anyone over at pande wants to check if the opencl bug has been finally fixed, because regardless of ppd, it would be nice to have things running efficiently without workarounds.

The OpenMM/FAHCore developers are in close contact with developers at both NVidia and AMD and my guess is that their back-channel communications carry a lot more information about the FAH specific bug that have limited forward progress of FAHCore_1* than you or I (or anandtech, for that matter) have access to. In spite of the lack of announcements from Stanford, I have no doubt that the Developers continue to develop/test/optimize the critical issues that limit progress on the GPU front.

As far as your report is concerned, are you implying that 10475 was touched by the applicable bug so you detected that something changed? It's my impression Projects which DONOT use the critical feature(s) are the only ones distributed to FAH Donors so we have no way to test a potential fix, while Projects which DO use those features are tested and retested in the Pande Lab. The developers must be staying on top of the issue(s) and when they have something, they'll start distributing it.

As far as 350.05 is concerned, NVidia specifically mentions crashes in the Frostbite engine and says nothing about crashes in OpenMM so my hunch is that it's strictly a game-oriented fix, not a Stream Computing oriented fix.

that was more a quick "i updated to this (from what i can tell alpha) driver version and nothing has broken in the process" (from the little amount of stuff i've done today). my reason for mentioning 10475 was also because it is a core 18 project, and i'm running it on hardware that is impacted by the bug. this is easily recognized by roughly 1/3 the ppd of a core 17 wu run on the same hardware, whereas on something like a gtx660 i have normally seen a modest 15-20% difference across core17 and 18 projects, as is to be expected.

that out of the way, i mainly posted to get attention of this out there, since it's going to a new opencl version the bug might have gotten fixed, hence the entire reason for posting (i don't play any games that were affected by it). however the potential for the opencl update to include a fix for the opencl bug that causes the performance drop for all (iirc) core18 wus on windows is definitely worth making a "hey, this driver might have fixed this issue with core18" post.

just my two cents.

Demonfang - if you are referring to the Maxwell OpenCL bug (that required a patch to core 18 so it wouldn't crash on Maxwells, but killed performance), that was fixed in a previous but recent driver and the FahCore was modified to include a check for recent drivers. If new enough drivers are found then it removes the workaround and runs at full speed. Is your 960 not getting comparable PPD to Core 17 projects on that 10475?

that is the very bug i was referring to, of which i question the fixing of it
i'll put it this way: my gtx660 (which i stuffed back in for folding alone) is getting more ppd, by a good amount, compared to my 960 running the same core 18 project. with core 17 i normally see ~150-170k ppd if i let it run nonstop, right now on 10477 i'm seeing ~43k ppd
if someone could chime in with proper ppd for a 960 running 10477 with 1392 or thereabouts boost clock (this is just what my asus card came at).

ok, found the issue. new core version works great...after i force the client to download it >.>

i think someone somewhere didn't update the WS to trigger downloading a new core version that has the code that looks for newer drivers :!:

on that note, getting ~131k on 10477, about 20% below average points but certainly more than the crappy 45k or so i was getting, so i'll take it.

also of note, i HATE windows when it cannot be bothered to put gpu indices in the right order, gpu 0 with an opencl index of 1 and gpu 1 with an opencl index of 0

It's like the United Nations of slot ordering, no one can agree on a fixed definition! Windows? Driver? Motherboard position? OpenCL index? CUDA index?

Yeah, that is what I was worried about Demonfang - by chance did you notice if it was a new Core Version #? Periodically I delete all my cores, just to make sure there isn't a sneaky core update hiding :D

yep, it was on 0.0.3 and after wiping cores folder (since it has a haphazard folder structure) it retrieved 0.0.4 and immediately started chewing along full speed (comparatively). still doesn't change that the client, especially with beta flag set, should be more proactive about checking for new cores (perhaps this could be added in the future? check once a day if any new core versions exist).

that aside, as stated before, ppd seems low on core18 vs core 17 units:
core17: ~160k average
core18: ~135k average
but as with beta, i still chalk this up to either approximation of value and fix later and focus on getting science done, or further core optimizations that have yet to be realized (or most likely both). that said, i tend to use points as a relative measure of work getting done (as i think others do) and seeing lower than optimal (in this case ~170k ppd) points tells me my card is not being as efficiently utilized as it could be (i always factor in 5% just for normal variances, and it's below 95% of 170k). all that said, at least it's not core15 >.>

oh, and yes, i have been running folding nonstop for a few days bar some fumbling around with slots from the aforementioned indices clusterf*** and some wu's getting dumped as a result >.>

The WU is responsible for specifying the minimum version of the core. If you have version 0.0.3 on your system (or nothing) and a WU specifies that it requires 0.0.4, a new core will be downloaded. If the WU specifies that it only requires 0.0.3, a new core will not be downloaded, even if it is on the server. It's the responsibility of the project owner to adjust his project so that the WUs specify the required core. The client doesn't keep track of any of that information, other than to read the information from inside the WU and dispatch the specified core, downloading it if necessary.

Bruce is right about when the client pulls a new core. I would add that if the 0.0.4 version of the core is still in beta status, the researcher is NOT going to update the minimum core version requirement in the existing projects to force the new core to download on unsuspecting donors.

It is then up to beta testers to trigger the download manually. However, a well planned researcher could release a new beta project with the new core requirement. Depends on timing I guess, confidence in the new core version, etc.

nVidia Driver 350.12 -- OpenCL 1.2

Post by Grendel »

nVidia released 350.12 today, from the release notes:
OpenCL 1.2
Added support for OpenCL 1.2. The OpenCL 1.2 drivers are based on the published Khronos Specification and are expected to pass the Khronos Conformance Testing Process. Current conformance status can be found at http://www.khronos.org/conformance.

Kepler and Maxwell GPUs are supported, including the following: [GT 640 to GeForce GTX TITAN X]
Will OpenCL 1.2 be supported out-of-the-box by the current cores 17 & 18 ? Trying to figure out if I should even consider replacing 327.23 on my folders (reluctant to touch running systems that are spread all over the place...)

Edit: Thanks for merging my post. Thread slipped right by me... :)

A FAHCore that uses OpenCL requires a certain minimum version. If the Pande Group needs a feature that's only in 1.2, they'll need to rewrite the core to use that feature and then find a way to restrict it to machines that have that driver, so NO, the existing cores won't start using it out-of-the-box.

On the other hand, if 1.2 happens to fix some bugs that were in the previous version, you'll benefit from that.
