I use ne newst Client (7.4.4)
My CPU (Cor2Dou 6700) works great, but the GPU (Nvidia GTX 280) won't start.

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit
Nvidia-Driver: 341.44

Anyone know how to do this problem?

Welcome to the folding forum.

Your GTX 280, while still listed as a supported card, has just about reached the end of its ability to be used for folding. The projects using Core_11 which used to be assigned to pre-Fermi nVidia cards such as your Tesla based GPU ran out last August. Some pre-Fermi cards can successfully process WU's using Core_15, but not all. These older pre-Fermi cards cards can not process newer projects requiring Core_17 or later.

If you want to try and see if your card can do Core_15 work, you will need to add a couple options to your GPU slot to indicate that. First is adding the option max-packet-size and set its value to small. Next is setting the option client-type to beta. Then you should be able to get a Core_15 WU assigned. You will have to check and see if the WU's do complete successfully.

Use of Core_15 has been announced as approaching end of life, so once these few remaining projects finish there will be no further work available for older nVidia GPU's. Until then you can contribute to the folding projects if your card can successfully process these WU's.

In it's day, the GTX280 was a powerful GPU, but that was several generations of GPU ago.

When NVidia discontinues support, Folding@home needs to do the same. Beginning late September 2014, NVIDIA ceased supporting the GeForce 200 series using their mainstream drivers. Legacy support for the previous driver version is being maintained until April 1 2016.

I would seriously consider upgrading the GPU soon. Many more modern GPUs provide faster processing, reduced power consumption, and can be had in a wide range of prices.

Code: Select all

i think, ther is no chance :(

Whats about an older Driver-Version (nvidia) or an older Clien-Version?

At the moment, i use the GPU only for Photoshop or converting Videos and it's very fast. But it works 95 % of the time on idle. An upgrade is planned for next year (with AMD Zen CPU and 14 nm GPU by Nvidia).

Well, you could try v6 client with -forcegpu nvidia_fermi to get core_15 work (only). But you should watch it closely for some time, just to be sure that the GPU can fold properly. The v6 client won't get core_17 or newer work which wouldn't fold on a pre-Fermi GPU.

There is a problem with the server that handles 7 of the 8 remaining Core_15 projects, it went down yesterday afternoon from what I am reading in the server log. This WS runs as a VM on the same server as another WS they have announced they were aware of having problems with over the past week which is also down, so possibly may be back in service later. The WS with the 8th remaining Core_15 project appears to be currently out of wok to assign, it might have WU's to assign when the ones currently out are returned.

That is an unfortunate coincidence with your attempt to start using your GTX 280. I did not notice that the server was down last night when posting. So at the moment even changing to the version 6 client may not get a WU as the few available from the one server will not be enough for all requests for the older work.

Stay with V7 and those settings. When the server comes back up, the GPU will start folding. I have an older NV card setup the same way. It's been folding that way for many months. So trouble free I don't even check it any more. Guess I should check it today.

IT WORKS! :D

And i've removed the options of package_size and client_type.

The GTX 280 runs with full load. The winter can come!

Thanks for the help.

If you continue to get WU's without the options set, that would point to updates in settings on the servers. But you may need to reset those options if you do not get a new WU after the current one finishes.

You're right. Now it works fine with the options. Thanks for the help.

Just a reminder, Core_15 is the last core any Tesla based GPU like yours can run. I am happy you are still able to contribute, but it IS an old card.

(a similar ATI card of the same age would already be useless for FAH https://folding.stanford.edu/home/core1 ... d-of-life/)
