Nvidia GTX 550 Ti

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Nvidia GTX 550 Ti

Post by AuxiliusM »

I got the problem that the programm pushes the GPU to 99-100% wich results in massiv fan noise and temps of about 83 C.

Thanks in advance (:

Welcome AuxiliusM

In actuality, the problem you describe is the expected result of running the F@h application. The intention is to fully utilize the compute performance available in your GTX 550ti, which means the GPU will be maxed out and you'll generate a good amount of heat and consequent fan noise. You can try moving the "Folding Power" slider to Medium or Light to decrease the amount of time the GPU kicks in, waiting for the computer to be idle, which is when you're most likely away from it and the noise may not bother you as much.

Unfortunately, there are no intermediate settings for a GPU. It either runs at ~99% or it's off (unlike some other parts of your computer). By running it only when the computer is idle, hopefully you'll shift the time the fans run to a time when you're not near the computer.

You ight consider improving the case ventilation. That might reduce the speed of the GPU fan, resulting in a net reduction in noise.

I would also love to undervolt or just turn down the CPU while the noise could disturb me but that probably wouldn´t meet the expiration date so the efford is pretty much useless :P is there any way to pick the length of a folding process? If yes how? bec. so i could utilise about 8 hours of cpu per day. If not does it hurt to delete the gpu slot untill a reasonable tasks with a fitting timeframe appears?

I downvolted GTX560ti by Zotac (when I had It) with default clock remained using BIOS tweaker. That helped to reduce temperature so I could run fan slower. Due to complete imperfection of Zotac's fan I replaced it with two 60mm fans stolen from AMD BOX cooler. And started to hear PSU noise while videocard worked more silent
