Issue with Nvidia 820M clGetDeviceInfo (-5)

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Issue with Nvidia 820M clGetDeviceInfo (-5)

I am running F@H on my laptop with a i5 CPU and an Nvidia 820M GPU.
Although the CPU is folding fine the GPU seems to be acting erratic.

I completely uninstalled my graphics drivers with a gpu drivers sweeper and reinstalled them.
Now it seems to work erratically.

But after a reboot or pause/resume it goes back to how it was before. Discarding the incomplete work unit and throwing errors.

I tried searching ERROR:exception: Error initializing context: clGetDeviceInfo (-5) but Google leads me to a dead end.

Neither of those logs seems to contain your first 100 lines telling us your configuration. This, of course, severely hampers your help.

While in general Laptop video cards are very weak at F@H, one other issue can be that you need drivers from Nvidia to fold, but sometimes only drivers from the laptop manufacturer will display graphics correctly.

820M should be a old Fermi GPU and may be unable to run the latest WUs. Fermi was replaced by Kepler, and Kepler has been replaced by Maxwell. Recently Maxwell was replaced by Pascal.

Core_17 runs on Fermi, I am not sure Core_21 does.

The clGetDeviceInfo error indicates that you did not download/install the drivers directly from the NVidia website. The drivers supplied by Microsoft remove some essential features if you want to use it for anything OTHER THAN putting video on screen.

The above log contains cases where it didn't work, as well as when it started folding successfully, eventually.
you need drivers from Nvidia to fold
The clGetDeviceInfo error indicates that you did not download/install the drivers directly from the NVidia website.
The drivers I installed were from the Nvidia website itself. It did begin folding after that. I then restarted my computer and it went back to showing the errors. However, eventually after multiple attempts and pause/resumes and lots of rejected work units, it begins folding again.
