GTX 960

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GTX 960

Post by Ricorocks »

Hi Guys,

Well my i7 cpu, with the new evga gtx960, is up & running. I've installed FAH on it & changed identity to my passkey. I looked at 'slots' it says: '0 - cpu, 1 - GPU'. Is there anything else to do, or did the software figure out whats best.

NVIDIA has a new driver, for the 900 series, ver. 372.54, I've updated to it. Will win10, want to install it's driver at the next windows updates?

Yes, Win10 will (eventually) want to update your driver and when it does, they'll break FAH by uninstalling OpenCL. Manually install the recommended driver from NVidia and reconfigure Win10 NOT to install drivers.

Post the top portion of your log per the instructions below.

My guess was right.

Code: Select all

18:19:07:Enabled folding slot 00: READY cpu:7
Open Advanced Control (aka FAHControl)
Select Configure + Slots + cpu + Edit
Near the top, change the number of CPUs to 6
OK + Save.

I read your post as configure > slots > choose highlight cpu > edit > change to cpu to 6?

I did the above, which took me to another page, which said cpu -1, is this the value to change to six?

Okay! Got it now at web control it says CPU-6. The little circle (near progress bar) is yellow, the GPU's circle is green & cranking. The changes were made to the machine the log came from. I'll check back in an hour or so, hopefully, CPU is green & progessing.

Thanks
Rico

NOTE: I could tell FAH was inactive on the CPU as its temp went fro 71 to 56C, also GPU temp stays at 71 - 72C, is this ok, or more cooling required? Perhaps CPU's circle was yellow, awaiting next dl The GPU was still working.

The temperature case rating (the maximum temperature allowed at the processor Integrated Heat Spreader) for your i7-950 is 67.9 deg C. (Ref: http://ark.intel.com/products/37150/Int ... -Intel-QPI), so by that standard you could use a better cooling solution.

Okay! All is well, I guess the cpu finished its job & the gpu was still active, once the gpu finished, new assignments were give & both are folding! GR8!

PS3EdOlkkola - I read your comments and immediately used VNC, to check on the heat situation 72 cpu, 72-73 gpu.

Before this came into service, used the air compressor, to blow out, stopped tha fans from spinning while cleaning. Any suggestions for cooling, all 4 core cpu's 71 - 73C, should I shut down now? DL Speedfan supposed to allow user settings for fan speeds, still trying to figure out how & how fast. I'll DL afterburner now

Thanks Amigo

If you're running the current CPU cooling fan at 100%, then a better solution is needed. I believe you mentioned your case is full-size, so the good news is you likely have enough room for a better cooling solution that won't cost a fortune. I've used the Coolermaster Hyper 212 cooling solution in the past and been very pleased with it. The only reason I don't use the 212 series now is because my server cases are too short for the height of the cooler. This model is compatible with the socket profile of your i7-950 (LGA 1366) and is relatively inexpensive ($44.99) for a two-fan (push-pull) cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 000X-00037 Just check height, width and depth to make sure it fits within your case, and check to be sure if will fit over your DRAM sticks if you have high-profile memory (i.e. tall heat spreaders). Others may have a different opinion, but I'd suspend SMP (CPU) folding until you get a better cooling solution installed.

I'm sorry to disagree but the CPU temperature 73°C is fine. If you hit 90°C then you have a problem and the PC will shutdown itself.

The value for the CPU to change must be 6 (not -6)

Good Morning Guys,

I throttled FAH to medium overnight & now it's cpu 72, gpu 71 & mb 54. So med or fast speed same. I'm not sure it it's a full tower, it's definitely larger than most desktop cases, it a "RaidMaxEnzo." The case has no vents, left un-used to mount another fan. I do not know how to push the cpu fan, previously at cpu 72, one of those GPUz reported fan usage at 34%. It seems like that would be, the fan is in "auto" & adjusting fan usage to the heat load. Would running with the cover OFF, help? CPU is set for 6.

This is what sit on to of the CPU now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835103055. A long time ago this V8 fan, was bad, the system notified me that this fan was bad. I took it for repair, they had to remove the MB, to replace.
memory is 12 gb, 2gb x 6, ddr3 1333 triple mem module, Corsair value.

Okay, the new machine has not been on line a full 24hrs, yet & at least 8 hrs. FaH set "Medium" I began yesterday at 69,554 pts, & 105 WU's, this morning 177,053 pts & 115 WU's.

Temperatures are all fine :-) If you take cover off then dust will get all over your case inside.
If you want to take a tool you can make vents at the bottom of the case and put a big fan there including a dust filter.

Hi Foldy,

Been checking out in addition to your link, other O.C forums. This topic is like two guys arguing Ford vs Chevy. I believe the GPU temp. is "fine", if it thought it was hot, %Fan would increase, higher than the current 34%.

I also believe, that Intel set's its temp guideline (should not exceed), conservatively, or what they are comfortable with under normal usage. I've found that many think the i7 runs hot, in comparison to what, not mentioned. It would be nice to know what others here are experiencing!

Thinking out loud, on my case, the cover (plastic &metal) has two vents, the upper vent appears to be the size of a 5.5" case fan, I wonder if attaching, a fan there, blowing OUT, so as to suck hot air out, would be helpful. The only think I can think of is, bu sucking air out, by fan this may dirupt the normal air flow, inside the case, causing temps to go up. I will monitor & test, I have all the stuff already & the fan can be run via usb or AC. I McGivered a test, had to use bottom, vent, top vent to flat, some gorilla tape, & it's sucking & blowing. If this works ill try mounting the fan on the inside top, using either glue or screws.

Wow! Approx. 1hr running McGiver mods.

without: with Mcgiver
CPU 72 68
mb 54 51
gpu 71 72 68

also maybe only one qtr. of the fan covers, the vent. I think I can mount, inside the case, top vent, & the fan would match, the vents dimensions. I'll wait to hear from you guys, before I get the hammer & nails out. just about 6% improvement cpu mb, & gpu.
