Low PPD from 4x 1080tis (~400k each) - help please!

Morning all,

I was previously running a 4 1080ti pc that was pulling 3.8-4mil PPD successfully for a couple of months, using a Gigabyte X99-UD5 board. I needed to free this PC up for something else so I have setup a new rig and transfered the old 4 1080tis to the new rig but frustratingly am only pulling ~1.2 -2mil PPD.

Running windows 10 pro and have tried drivers 378.92, 384.94 and 385.41 and its not made a noticeable difference. I've also tried reinstalling FAH. GPU utilisation is low (65-75%) but cards are boosting nicely to 1850-1900 Mhz (no overclock). Temps are fine (~65c) and have tried 2 PSUs (1 of which is the 1600W I used in the old 4mil PPD rig).

The cpu is a 6850k (40 pcie lanes) and mobo is Gigabyte X99-SOC. GPU-Z confirms 3 of the GPUs are running 3.0 @ 8x and the other is running 3.0 @ 16x. I'm not cpu folding or doing anything else on the system so CPU usage is low (under 50% on each core/thread)

Looking at HFM download I have processed on 34 WUs for projects 9*** with an avergae of 407k PPD (highest 551k, lowest 208k). I have processed 12 WUs on projects 11*** with an average of 827k (highest 922k, lowest 549k).

It looks like a GPU driver issue to me but I've done a clean install twice for 3 different drivers and I'm still not getting anywhere. One of those times I used DDU (but not in safe mode, as I'm on teamviwer at work) but surely after 6 driver reinstalls you would have thought that would fix it if it was a driver issue.

Could it be something wrong with the mobo? Or the drivers of something other than the video card? or the windows 10 install?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Is the GPU utilisation low for each of the 4 GPUs? How much PPD gets each GPU? How much PPD you get if only one GPU folds?

The stats server flat file generation is broken currently, you do not use these to estimate your PPD?

I put your projects from logfile in bonus calculator and it is indead too low TPF should be 0:40 instead of 1:24

Maybe there is some BIOS settings wrong? Or the mainboard drivers are missing? Or can you set Windows Power Options to performance?

Just checked and current GPU utilisations are 2 @ ~70%, 2 @ 80%. 2 of the GPUs were folding 9*** projects @ ~350/400k, the other 2 were doing 11*** projects @ 800/850k. Over the last few days I have seen each slot get 800k+ PPD, it just depends if it is allocated a 11*** project or not.

Pausing all 3 slots and leaving a 11*** project running by itself boosted PPD from 850k to 950k.
Then swapping which 3 were paused, so that all were paused apart from a 9*** project boosted PPD from 350k to 540k (although running the TPF in the calc suggests a more likely PPD of 640k

Guess PCIe speed not fully working.

Which BIOS Version, latest seems F20?

Did you install intel chipset drivers?
http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Dr ... efresh.zip

Had another user which reported he needed more than one CPU core per gtx 1080ti but may also be related to pcie bandwidth.

What happens to PPD if you run 2 GPUs or 3 GPUs concurrently?

Did the old PC also run with Windows 10?

Which Mhz your 6850k runs at? Is it downclocking because of heat?

Has your mainboard an extra 8pin plug from power supply for pcie or extra 4 pin plug for CPU?

Is running Linux instead an option to try?

Wow thanks for such rapid/detailed response foldy

Yes, running bios F20
I don't think I did install the chipset drivers actually (I tried to originally but it failed for some reason). I've just followed the link you sent though, installed and restarted, but still no difference. Have 4 gpus currently folding at 1.9m PPD
My CPU is 6 core/12 thread to each GPU should be well fed from a CPU perspective. It's running at 3.7GHz @ ~45C so no downclock

The new motherboard has a 4 pin and an 8 pin cpu power connector, and I have connected both to my psu cpu sockets. The motherboard also has a 6 pin power plug next to the top pcie slot which is recommended for use with 3+ GPUS. I have this plugged into a gpu cable to my psu.

Just tried going down to 3 GPUs for 20mins and PPD fell to 1.7m
Then going down to 2 GPUs made PPD fall to 1m.

I've never used linux before but I'm happy to give it a go if neccessary, especially if it can get me more PPD than windows. However I would really like to be able to monitor this PC remotely and not sure if this is possible in linux easily?

It has been mentioned elsewhere in another topic about low GPU utilization, are yours set to "High Performance"? That will make a difference in GPU usage which has a direct effect on speed of processing and points.

If you've got a spare hard disk and an hour or so, I reckon Linux is worth a go and should see 5 M PPD. It will at least rule out software / driver issues.

I still follow this method (using mint 17.3): viewtopic.php?f=80&t=27040#p274116 and did a fresh install just yesterday. The only gotcha is the 'gpu = false' flag gets set by the installer and needs removing from the advanced client configuration right at the end. There are also other guides around if you want ubuntu etc. instead.

Remote monitoring of the fahClient is the same as on windows - just add the ip addresses and make sure 36330 is open.

Do you mean 'Chose a power plan' in windows control panel? If so, that was set to balanced but I changed to High performance. Doesnt seem to have changed anything, even after reboot :(

May give linux a try, thanks

I would start at the beginning and see if each card can run at full speed by itself, pull all the cards except one and leave that in the x16 slot, test it for a few hours and then test the other cards in turn. If they are all running at full speed individually then try 2 cards at the same time etc.

If its not that, try Linux and if you still have the same issue then I would suspect thermal throttling

Thanks everyone for your help. I finally got to the bottom of it - needed to update bios to F22. Now getting between 3.8-4m PPD :D

I tried getting linux running but hit a snag - FAH didnt detect my GPUs and on a reboot it got some kind of error that prevented linux from booting. I will look into installing linux again at some point if it gives a higher PPD than windows, just need some free time

Thanks again all

Under LINUX, you can't start up the Folding client 'till XWindows has initialised, as it won't find the GPUs prior to that.

The standard "put the folding initialize script" in /etc/rx0.d (and rc1.d et cetera) CAUSES issued due to this, and really needs to get changed, as XWindows is NOT RUNNING when those scripts get called in the bootup process.

Try Linux Mint. I've never had that problem. The only problem I ever had with recognizing GPUs was that I had to manually download the GPUs.txt file.

from:
fah.stanford.edu/file-releases/public/GPUs.txt

to:
/var/lib/fahclient

I'm hoping to have a mint install guide up in the next week or so, just waiting on getting the rig stable first

That is incorrect. It doesn't require X to fold. Just a valid nvidia driver, opencl and the correct configuration of the clients config.xml (at the most basic end of things).

My system(s) never boot to X. I login from console and then use startx to bring it up. Folding is started by scripts called from crontab.

For testing purposes. Login to a console (without X running). Go to your folding directory and run FAHClient. Does it run? Does it fold? If it doesn't then you have some issues with configuration.

I think it might have been a problem with the drivers, but anyway I have got Mint up and running now and it's doing great - between 4.5-4.7m PPD

I've now upgraded another rig from Windows to Mint and that has got a nice PPD boost too. Fully recommend it to anyone :)
