9600GT detected but not working

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

9600GT detected but not working

Post by IvanPro84 »

hello,

I've installed Folding@home after many years since I used it to help with COVID research. CPU works flawlessly and chunks the jobs it gets assigned without problems. GPU is detected, marked as "ready" but does not get assigned anything. The log states the following (excerpt):

WU00:FS01:Connecting to 192.0.2.1:8080
WARNING:WU00:FS01:WorkServer connection failed on port 8080 trying 80
WU00:FS01:Connecting to 192.0.2.1:80
ERROR:WU00:FS01:Exception: Failed to connect to 192.0.2.1:80

I've tried everything I found on the Internet and your forums, including: reinstalling twice, deleting the GPU slot and recreating it, running MemtestG80 (for the sake of it) without any errors, verified that GPU list file is in my directory and including entries for my videocard (it has 0x10de:0x0622:2:0:G94 for GeForce 9600GT), running GPUCapsViewer's OpenCL demos to verify they run (and they do). My hardware ID is as follows:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0622&SUBSYS_827C1043&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0622&SUBSYS_827C1043
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0622&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0622&CC_0300

I really don't know what I'm missing here and with my limited knowledge I'm at a dead point.. Hope for some help from you. Thanks for your amazing work.

Ivan Semenzato.

The 9600 GT is too old and no longer supported. Minimum is a higher end Fermi based GPU, Kepler or newer is better.

When I suspect the hardware may be too old I go to techpowerup for stats
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/r ... 600-xt.c30

I look for OpenCL version 1.2 or higher and your card lacks that, and I look for Double Precision math and your card lacks that.

Your card is from 2003, that is 119 in dog years.

Thanks for your fast support!

@JimboPalmer. my card is not ATI, it's NVIDIA from 2008, still your answer (and Joe_H's) is pretty clear. I'm just a casual gamer who happens to play (rarely) old games. I just wanted to clarify that in the unlikely case someone else comes up with my same question.
Guess I'll wait until I can meet a friend of mine that had promised to gift me an used GTX960 (I had to meet him yesterday but in the meantime COVID lockdown was decided here.. pretty unlucky!)!

Yes the card have similar names and I was wrong

Sadly, if I look for OpenCL version 1.2 or higher and your card lacks that, and I look for Double Precision math and your card lacks that.
So it is 5 years newer and still lacks 'modern' specs.

I folded with one of those when Core_11 was current. It was iffy on Core_15 and obsolete with Core_17
