nvidia GT635M very slow

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

nvidia GT635M very slow

Post by thomas delcourt »

hi all,

I've started folding recenly and my gpu seems extremely slow. On project 14310, the eta was 7 days (which is longer than the expiration) and PPD very low (~6000). The previous WU I ran also took about 6 days to finish. Also, I couldn't use my computer when the gpu was under load as every mouse click took 10-20 seconds to respond (contrary to games, which allow me to navigate between windows).

I'm using a nvidia GT635M on ubuntu 18.04.

Is this GPU model known to be bad for folding or is it rather a problem with my setup? I had issues to set it up with openCL and had to install a few bits and bobs (don't remember what though).

thanks for any help and ave a good day,

thomas

The client needs a WU to fold a percent or two before it can give a more accurate estimate. Before that it will display an ETA that is close to the timeout number.

In a desktop a GT630 is about the minimum needed to process and complete WUs on time, and will need to run almost constantly on some projects. They sold several variants under the same model designation, the last one has about twice the processing power and does a bit better.

Looking up your GT635M, it is listed as about the same processing power as the older GT630 cards. So it should be able to complete some or most GPU projects, but maybe not all.

Thanks very much for the information!

The eta is quite stable over time.
Given that it causes a lot of lag on my system I think I'll just stop using the gpu and carry on with 7 cpus.

Thanks again!

With the GPU slot removed, you could experiment with 8 CPUs.

FAH is planning an enhancement to how GPUs are rated, how projects are rated, and which pairs are optimum. To do that, benchmarks are run with both good and bad combinations. Unfortunately you are currently processing one of the undesirable combinations. That will be taken into account when the new system is rolled out.

Welcome to the F@H Forum thomas delcourt,

The screen lag caused by folding on the GPU can be minimized or in some cases eliminated if you disable hardware acceleration. I have successfully done that in the past and assuming you're using Windows, here are some pointers if you choose to test it out on your system:
