"FAHClient.exe - Bad Image" Errors

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

"FAHClient.exe - Bad Image" Errors

Post by rickshein »

On application startup, I'm getting 8 sequential popup windows all titled "FAHClient.exe - Bad Image", saying:
"C:WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\[filename] is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.". The files identified in each window, in the order they appear, are:
nvcuda.dll
nvapi.dll
nvapi.dll
nvcuda.dll
nvapi.dll
nvcuda.dll
nvapi.dll
nvcuda.dll
After these windows are dismissed, the web control window shows the CPU running tasks, but nothing is running on the GPU. The panel reflects my graphics card: "GPU:0:TU116 (GEFORCE GTX 1660)"
System specifics:
AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Processor
GIGABYTE GA-AB350-Gaming 3 Motherboard
ZOTAC Gaming GeForce GTX 1660 6GB
Win 10, OS build 18362.720
FAH 7.5.1
From the log file, this error message repeats:
01:33:19:ERROR:WU01:FS01:Failed to start core: OpenCL device matching slot 1 not found, try setting 'opencl-index' manually

Looks like the wrong version nv driver. I would delete the two named dlls, then re-install the drivers, ensuring you get the right version from nVidia's website.

Well, good news, I don't know news... I updated the drivers (even the nVideo update software complained about the nvapi.dll file) and after restarting, I don't get the error messages. That being said, it's still showing no action on the GPU. Status is yellow, it says "Ready", but no work unit is assigned. I'll hang tough and wait and see if one gets assigned and hopefully it will run. I should know better. Rule 1 - check the cables. Rule 2 - update the drivers.

Rule 3 - post log header (200 lines) plus a bit of the tail just in case of of the clever peeps can spot any misconfiguration and save you a wait?? :)

btw - I am not one of the clever peeps ;) ... If you are and you are happy with your own logs then ignore the idiot trying to be helpful :)

Update - success! And I looked at that log file (once I found it) and thought about posting. It was huge and hard to tell what was pertinent.
Thanks!

The parts (or so I have seen posted) that tend to be the most helpful are the first 200 lines or so of the latest log as this shows the configuration of the installation then cropped/snipped to just have the WU that is erroring (from download to error I believe) - if it errors regularly then a sample of that rather than all usually suffices.

But glad to hear it is all working fine :)
