Can't Obtain GPU WU

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Can't Obtain GPU WU

Post by rpalri »

I'm using a 2008 vintage PC with a NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT.
It kept trying to obtain a WU assignment to no avail. Thinking it might be a problem with the server, I uninstalled F@H and reinstalled. Same deal each time. Lately the logs have shown that there was a problem connecting:

Code: Select all

09:06:35:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 65.254.110.245:80
09:06:37:WU00:FS00:Assigned to work server 192.0.2.1
09:06:37:WU00:FS00:Requesting new work unit for slot 00: READY gpu:0:G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] from 192.0.2.1
09:06:37:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 192.0.2.1:8080
09:06:58:WARNING:WU00:FS00:WorkServer connection failed on port 8080 trying 80
09:06:58:WU00:FS00:Connecting to 192.0.2.1:80
09:07:19:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Failed to connect to 192.0.2.1:80: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

The CPU slot is working but it seems a waste to just use it when the GPU has done so well in the past.

All device drivers are up to date and the F@H client version is 7.6.9. Is there something I'm missing?

The 9400 GT is too old to be used for GPU folding. Current minimum nVidia GPU would be one from the GT 400 series or newer, GT 600 or newer is recommended.

Thanks for the information @Joe_H
My CPU remains underutilized too because 1 thread is kept for the GPU. Is there a way I can atleast put the CPU to 100% use?

... or edit the CPU slot and replace the CPU figure in there (possibly -1) with the full number of cores/threads you have.

:? Odd … can you post your log including the first couple of hundred lines and any latest config report … with no GPU slot and either -1 in CPU slot configuration with slider on Full or actual number of cores/threads in the CPU slot configuration should do it :?

Ah … hang on .. it won't change until the next WU … can't uplift CPUs above what was set at WU download.

Hi, I believe you can restart the Fahclient to get the GPU change in effect without losing the WU.
At least I can on both Windows and Linux.

You can also directly edit the config-file for the change as specified in this guide https://medium.com/@julsimon/running-fo ... 6bb8f84218 In Windows it's under C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient/

However, today my GPU is not getting any work at all, so I think there is some problem with the GPU WU assignment generally today.

Iirc a WU can/will not run at a higher CPU core count that that it was downloaded at ... but I am happy to be proven wrong.

Re: Can't Obtain GPU WU

Post by anandhanju »

It looks good to me.

`02:44:53:WARNING:WU01:FS01:AS lowered CPUs from 2 to 1` means that the current WU was downloaded when the CPU slot was allocated to use 1 CPUs. The system is attempting to bump that up that to 2 now but there is a restriction that prevents downloaded WUs from using more CPUs that when then client got it.

Your next CPU WU should be running with 2 CPUs as the config and logs look good otherwise.
