GeForce GT730 ready to run and unable to get WUs

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GeForce GT730 ready to run and unable to get WUs

Postby byblos » Thu Jun 11, 2020 11:01 pm

I expected a NVIDIA GeForce GT730 to work, as I believe it is whitelisted and supported. However although it recognised in FAHControl System Info the client does not automatically create a slot for it. I can create a GPU slot manually andthe slot displays 'Ready however no WUs are downloaded. The log shows that a connection to work server 192.0.2.1 is timing out, and I understand that trying to get WUs from this invalid location means that my configuration is not supported. Latest drivers downloaded and installed fromNVIDIA. I'm at a loss to figure this one out, grateful for any help!

Re: GeForce GT730 ready to run and unable to get WUs

Postby Joe_H » Thu Jun 11, 2020 11:24 pm

There is more than one version of the GT 730. The older versions are based on one of the Fermi chips from nVidia, they may still show up as whitelisted, but they are in a group that is currently not being assigned WUs. Eventually those Fermi based cards may be blacklisted . The problem is that the Fermi chips they are based on only support OpenCL 1.1, the current requirement is 1.2 and support for Double Precision (FP64) calculations.

Some of the GT 730 cards are based on chips from a later series from nVidia, Kepler. Those do support OpenCL 1.2 and can be used for folding.

There is work on a CUDA based GPU folding core, your GT 730 might be able to be used with that. But that first depends on a new core being developed on OpenCL and then a CUDA version being created later. No idea of the timeframe for when that might appear. There may also be minimum versions of CUDA required that have not yet been determined.

Thank you! Disappointing but I'm glad to know. I'll pop it back in a slot from time to time and see if it picks anything up...
