Windows 10 + rtx2060 with 460.79 = dumped slot

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though NVidia has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Windows 10 + rtx2060 with 460.79 = dumped slot

Post by RMCholewa »

Lenovo Notebook Y540-15IRH Intel Core i7-9750H + nVidia RTX2060
Windows 10 x64 20H2 19042.662

Hi there,

Last night I was prompted for a new nvidia driver version (through the geforce experience app) and did the upgrade (to 460.79), shut it down and went to sleep.

Today I noticed that f@h 7.6.21 deleted the slot.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Windows 10 + rtx2060 with 460.79 = dumped slot

Post by psaam0001 »

Was there a Windows update to your system within the last day or so??

If so, I'd suggest going to www.nvidia.com/drivers, and get the 460.79 driver package from them. Then run it, doing a clean reinstall to make sure the libraries that F@H looks for before establishing an active GPU folding slot (CUDA & OpenCL) are installed.

If you are attempting to fold on your Intel CPU's iGPU (integrated GPU), you may want to take a moment to get the latest drivers from Intel. When doing so, you will need to know the core name of the CPU you are using.

Note that only the newer Intel iGPU's (generation 9 or newer) are supported in FAHClient 7.6.21 (the only version of the F@H client software to support Intel iGPU folding at this time). Though you will need to enter the Advanced Control Panel (FAHControl), and in the expert configuration settings, you will need to add the extra client option "gpu-beta" with its value being "true".

Thanks for the quick reply.

Since I installed f@h 7.6.21 weeks ago, it started detecting the CPU, the nvidia GPU and the Intel GPU (but this last one disabled). And it was working until last night (460.79 install).

Will do a nvidia clean reinstall.

Thank you!

No dice. clean install, driver from nvidia site. Still no slot for the nvidia.

Strange thing: the logs show nvidia/cuda detected, but it seems the be on the same bus/slot than the Intel integrated graphics... is it normal? Why F@h is able to see there is a nvidia/cuda capable graphics but won't add a slot for it?

Re: Windows 10 + rtx2060 with 460.79 = dumped slot

The RTX 2060 is not detected as such.
There have been such glitches recently with newer Nvidia drivers. Maybe this one is affected as well.
The solution was to revert to older drivers, or to just delete the latest drivers and let Windows install the standard version.

If you set the gpu-beta option as true in the expert tab, remove it from there. then go to the individual slot for the Intel iGPU, and edit it there to read "gpu-beta" with a value of "true". before saving those slot settings.

I had a similar issue today out of the blue although I was running 451.79. A clean start gave me the same message about being a "beta" gpu even though the card is a 1070 that has done hundreds if not thousands of WU. Updated to 460 and still no dice.

So I deleted gpus.txt and re-started and all is good.

Your issue may not be exactly the same but worth a try.

That is also an idea I did not think of.

I just did a full reinstall of f@h. Full remove and install. Worked like a charm. All three slots detected and working.

Thank you!

There was an update to NVidia drivers.... The latest is 460.89, released today (12/15/2020) for Win10 users.

Today I noticed that f@h 7.6.21 deleted the slot.

Any suggestions?
A large percentage of driver updates recommended by the geforce experience app are updates to facilitate a specific feature in a specific game on a specific recently released GPU. They rarely do anything for FAH. If FAH is working, I generally skip all updates except (a) if my GPU was recently released or (b) if Window, itself says I need it. In the second case, I go directly to nvidia.com and install their latest release -- which removes the Microsoft nagging by WIndowsUpdate.

If FAH recognizes my GPU and WindowsUpdate isn't nagging me, I probably don't need the update.

On my Windows systems, I don't bother to install the GeForce experience at all. As Bruce said, it provides no benefit to F@H (but does tie up HD/SSD space).
