openCL/AMD APU/Folding@home compatibility issue

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

openCL/AMD APU/Folding@home compatibility issue

Postby Demmers » Sat Jun 19, 2021 8:00 pm

I use my Linux Mint 20.1 machine to do folding@home using the Ryzen 3400G APU, using just the CPU. I now want to try using the graphics part as well. This requires openCL. You can only get this from AMD drivers, as openCL is not installed by default. Having found that AMD now have drivers for Ubuntu 20.04 (which Mint 20.1 is based on), I thought i'd give this a shot. So i've installed https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/relea ... inux-20-40

Code: Select all
/amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=rocr,legacy

And sure enough, I now have openCL installed. However, "Number of devices - 0"

Code: Select all
$ clinfo

Here's where things get really weird. FAHControl can see the graphics chip, but NOT openCL!

Can anyone figure out how I get openCL to see the graphics chip, and FAHControl to see openCL?!
I have posted this in the Linux Mint forum as well.

Do you have the package "ocl-icd-opencl-dev" installed?
Does "clinfo" show different info to "sudo clinfo"?

Yes I have that package already installed

Code: Select all
ocl-icd-opencl-dev is already the newest version (2.2.11-1ubuntu1)

No difference between "clinfo" and "sudo clinfo"

Code: Select all
sudo clinfo

I should also note that I have already added the fahclient user to the video and render groups

Code: Select all
sudo adduser fahclient render
sudo adduser fahclient video

Due to openCL not detecting the graphics, and FAHControl not detecting openCL (but can see the graphics), i'm thinking that the issue is with openCL. I'm about to add this query into the AMD forum as well, will update here accordingly.
