Radeon GPU Fails After Driver Update

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Radeon GPU Fails After Driver Update

Post by rickshein »

I have a Win10 system with a Radeon R7 360 graphics card.
Upon updating the card driver, the GPU slot is failing (no known problems prior to the update).
Driver date 5/11/2021, Driver version 27.20.20903.8001

From my log file:
14:27:33:******************************* System ********************************
14:27:33: CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor
14:27:33: CPU ID: AuthenticAMD Family 23 Model 113 Stepping 0

Why it's giving information about a non-existing nVidea Cuda is beyond me.

When a job starts up that try's to run on the GPU, the log file says this:
14:29:45:WU01:FS02:0x22:There are 3 platforms available.
14:29:45:WU01:FS02:0x22:Platform 0: Reference

14:30:18:WU01:FS02:0x22:ERROR:125: Failed to create a GPU-enabled OpenMM Context.

I uninstalled FAH and reinstalled the latest version. The problem was not fixed.
Are there any known incompatibilities with the latest Radeon driver?

Did you get the driver update from AMD's website or did you download it as part of Windows Update? If you updated through Windows Update the download will be missing support for OpenCL. If that is the case, download the driver from AMD and install that.

As for the message about CUDA, that is an informational message from one of the two tests the client runs to detect usable GPUs when it starts up. It can be ignored if you do not have either a nVidia based card installed or nVidia based graphics on the logic board of your system.

I used the AMD Auto-Detect and Install utility from AMD - https://www.amd.com/en/support.

I downloaded and ran GPU Caps Viewer and it appears the OpenCL environment is running correctly.

AMD has moved the R7 300 series cards to legacy support. The latest driver I found on their site is this - https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... eon-r7-360. The driver download on this page has a different version of the driver listed for Windows 10, the release notes for this give the version number of the driver you listed in your first post as being the last version for Windows 7. The version for Windows 10 is listed as 27.20.21003.8013

It is also possible AMD introduced a bug in their last driver for this series card based on GCN 2nd gen chipset. Or something carried over from your older driver install and using a driver cleaner before installing may fix that.

I see what you are talking about.
I downloaded the legacy package - radeon-software-adrenalin-2020-21.5.2-win10-64bit-legacyasics-june21-legacy.exe.
According to "Package Contents" it includes both drivers:
Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.5.2 Driver Version 21.10.03.08 for Windows 10 (Windows Driver Store Version 27.20.21003.8013) and 21.09.03.08 for Windows 7 (Windows Driver Store Version 27.20.20903.8001).
The installation procedure does not ask me which one I want. Following installation, my system is still showing the same (Win7) version - 27.20.20903.8001.
How do I get it to install 27.20.21003.8013?

I think I have fixed the problem by going backwards.
I removed the device, and Windows immediately took it upon itself to reinstall a driver from it's database.
It loaded 26.20.12028.2 dated 8/16/2019.
My GPU slot is now successfully running.
Go figure.
Joe - thanks for the discussion.
