GPU Client, Sapphire Radeon 6670

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

GPU Client, Sapphire Radeon 6670

Post by Musiclover »

I'd like my CPU AND my GPU to be used for Folding@Home, but I'm having problems.

My system:
Gigabyte 970A-UD3
AMD FX-8150 CPU (4 cores, 4 pseudo-cores) (aftermarket HS/Fan)
16 GB RAM
Sapphire ATI 6670 1 GB PCI-E video (passive cooling)
DVD-R/W (Lightscribe)
1.5 TB SATA drive (Win 7 64-bit, Mageia 1 64-bit, dual-boot)
OCZ Fatality 550W PSU (can substitute PC P&C 750W if needed)

I'm running the 7.1.52 client under 64-bit Win 7 Pro. I copied the GPUs.txt file to the right directory (progra~86\FAHClient). I also downloaded a copy of OpenCL.dll to that directory. My GPU is whitelisted.

My CPU is running at 100% (monitoring widget that came with the OS). When I look at the "status" tab, slot 00 (CPU client) runs, but fails a moment or two after starting (GPU-z still shows zero percent use). But the "Work Queue" says slot 00 is still running. The Kill-A-Watt shows only a 4 watt decrease when FAH says the GPU client stops. (Even an air-cooled card should take more than 4 watts when ramping up/down, right?)

Is the GPU client working? Can you help me get it working? Here is the "system" part of the log:

Code: Select all

18:31:35:******************************* System ********************************

18:31:35:Win32 Service: false
18:31:35:***********************************************************************
When the GPU part fails, there is something in the log about "edrfile file hash check failed" and "Fatal error, dumping".

Will this GPU work? Will it work on the next project? Right now, I hit "finish" (PRCG 7023 -- 2, 39, 82) so it will stop until I can get your help.

Is there something else I should try? I want the Windows client to use both CPU and GPU, but I don't have a lot of time. Any help is appreciated.

(I have re-installed my OS two dozen times in the last 6 months because of problems. My patience is short.)

Thanks!

Okay, here's another project begun. The GPU client worked for a few seconds, then failed. Here's the log:

Once again, GPU-z says my video card is being used 0 percent (in 2D, core clock is 100 MHz, memory clock is 150 MHz). Every few seconds, it kicks up for a fraction of a second (clocks and percent use), but that's it.

I saw the "client config unavailable", but that should not be. Any ideas?

The Radeon 6670 should not be that exotic to have a need to mess around with any dll or GPU whitelist file. Why did you needed those things at the first place?
Does the GPU-Z report as your system having OpenCL support, I doubt it, but either case just go out and undo your OpenCL.dll magic and install the latest Catalyst driver set. Then try GPU folding again.

I've been using this GPU* with v7.1.50 with no problems. Running it without any overclocking. SMP 3 of my 4 core AMD box. -jj-

I checked, and I do have the latest driver (atiumdag 8.961.0.0, in Catalyst package 11.8).

The latest Catalyst did not come with OpenCL.dll, I had to get it elsewhere. If I don't have this file, the folding program will throw 2 identical complaint dialogs about every 30-60 seconds.

GPU-Z does not list this card as being capable of OpenCL, only DirectCompute 5.0.

Is this card able to do OpenCL? Is the folding software able to use my GPU without OpenCL, or am I restricted to SMP only?

I think AMD removed OpenCL support for XP (another thread), but I run Seven, so it should work.

So far, I have only been able to use the SMP client. Please let me know if the GPU client will ever work, or if there is anything else I should try. Or if I should file a bug report.

Thanks!

The latest Catalyst package is 12.4 released 4/25/2012. OpenCL should be packaged with it.

Yes, thanks. I downloaded that a day ago, but I forgot to install it. Why did Windows say the other Catalyst driver was up to date? (I don't know, but it's another chance to bash MS if you want.)

GPU load went up to 90 - 100 percent. GPU clock went up to 800MHz, memory clock to 1000 MHz (3D, gaming/high performance mode). I think I'm doing something worth 1835 points in about the same time that a 600 point project took with the SMP client. Power is 300W with monitor on, 265W with it off.

I rigged up a lazy, slow 120mm fan to shoot at the fanless video card. Temperatures went from 59.5C down to 53C. Maybe I'll try shooting an 80mm fan at it later.

Thanks!
