ATI HD 6800 Project: 11293 (Run 8, Clone 479, Gen 21)

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

ATI HD 6800 Project: 11293 (Run 8, Clone 479, Gen 21)

Post by didcrywolf »

Using v7.1.52 on a vista 64 machine, I have lost all ability to use my ATI radeon hd 6800 to fold as a GPU. This has been going on for a couple of days. My device driver for the GPU is 8.950.0.0

How can I get it back on track?

Hello didcrywolf and welcome to the folding support forum.

Can you please copy and paste the config section of your log and the part after what you've already shown in the supplied log. You can see the config by clicking on the Refresh button just above the log and then scrolling up to the top of the log. Your config section will be between the system info section and the processing section of the log.

When using an ati gpu it will use a complete CPU core by itself. As a result to get the most out of your smp client you should actually decrease the number of cores from smp:8 to smp:6 (7 is known to cause problems for some projects). That way the gpu processing does not interfere with the smp processing.

When you installed v7 did you ask it to run as a service? The gpu will not run as a service. If you did then "Finish" the smp work unit and uninstall/reinstall without the service option.

My guess is that you need to do some fiddling with the open_cl index on your GPU slot (try 0 or 1 rather than -1) or the GPU index (try 0 or 1 rather than -1). You may have to do a trial and error process of every combination to get it all aligned and working again. You have one GPU that can't fold and one that can and whenever I have done either a driver upgrade or a client upgrade I have found that the order of GPU's can change if there are multiples. The -1 value is for auto-detecting and I don't think that is working for you. So I think you will have to manually choose. Unfortunately I can't predict if either value will be a 0, or a 1

Try P5's suggestion and if using gpu-index = 0 or 1 still doesn't cause the gpu to start processing the following may be helpful.

Make the changes I referred to in my earlier post. If the gpu still doesn't start processing after changing to smp:6 and doing the uninstall/reinstall without using the service option come back and let us know.

You're using priority=low and it looks to me that both are set to low but if that's just on the smp slot it would mean that the gpu is getting little or no cpu resources which it needs to load and unload data. Please ensure that either both are set to low or the gpu is set to low and the smp is set to idle. My personal preference is to set them both to low. If just the smp is set to low and the gpu is set idle then the gpu will never get the cpu cycles it needs, especially if using smp:8.

I noticed you're using a checkpoint of 4. This is quite low and could cause corruption if you have a power interruption. The recommended 15 minutes works well and some people use the full 30 minutes to minimize the change of corruption. Corruption can occur if the power outage occurs during the writing of the checkpoint.

Longer check point settings also improves performance, as long as you do not stop and start the client often.

Big kaboom on PC reboot Now nothing will happen...
How do you do a command line clean up? do I have to launch an app through cmd.exe?
My other option is that I have a new SSD that I want to use to do a clean install. How do I avoid having ANYTHING left over? Is is better to use a new user name too?

Start>FAHClient>Uninstall ... should clean it up.

From your pic it looks like there is something set wrong. When the client is running on a local computer the Name under Clients should say local and the address should say 127.0.0.1:36330.

Use the following guide to reinstall:

Additional info:

Using a new user name shouldn't be necessary.

Is there a reason for not allowing the installer to use the default location rather than a new SSD?

To answer the first question, I am never going to have anything BUT SSDs (the future of HDDs is grim as are all things spinning inside my next build!) so any new OS, APPs and data will be on SSDs as for media it's going to the cloud...
So I did install a new OS W7 ultimate. on the SSD ,loaded v7.1.52. and besides reducing SMP to 6 and removing my second GPU (ATI HD 3600 with no work) as suggested, the program has been plugging fine. The GPU has been running quite faster than the CPU by a magnitude of 5x.
I can only thank you, cross my fingers that nothing else happens...

GONE FISHING for the long weekend!
Merci from Montreal!
