ATI 5670 / 12.8 drivers (fails to start)

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

ATI 5670 / 12.8 drivers (fails to start)

Downloaded the 7.1.52 version and while a bit confusing at first, I seem to manage my way through it. I'm trying to only use the GPU (there's no motherboard GPU) but it always seems to fail after a couple of attempts. I've also disabled my firewall/security software (Outpost). The Catalyst control centre is not installed, just the 12.8 driver. Thanks.

As I recall, AMD no longer supports OpenCL on WinXP. Without that you can't fold on your Radeon 5670. The last version of the Catalyst drivers that included OpenCL for XP are from last year. I looked, but could not find the posts describing that right away. I think the last version that includes OpenCL support for XP is 11.10.

I had to reinstall FAH because it got stuck on "Connecting..." when I opened it, but now it looks like this is permanent (local/connecting/127.0.0.1:36330). It only goes away with a FAH reinstall.

Oh ok, found the answer. I confused the Autostart option, too - thought it was boot-related.

I'm back at this, because it won't work for me any more. I uninstalled, deleted all folders, reinstalled (autostart enabled as recommended) and use only a cpu slot. It worked once, but after that all I'm getting is Connecting: inactive. In case this is again an AMD issue (although I disabled gpu folding), I looked again for the OpenCL.msi installer. However, there isn't one in the 13.4 driver package. Is the AMD-APP-SDK-v2.8.1.0-Windows-64 package, the same thing?

This is yesterday's log, it doesn't seem to write a new one now.

It does not appear to be related to the GPU driver or the related OpenCL package. But it is hard to figure out what is wrong here with all of the configuration changes, deletion of the CPU (SMP) slot in the middle and other such modifications. There is a point in the log where a GPU slot was added, did you initiate that yourself or did it auto-configure one to add? If you do not want a GPU slot at all, set the parameter gpu to false.

In addition, there is no need for the no-assembly parameter to be set differently from the default. Beyond that, is the FAHClient process still running? You should be able to see it running in Task Manager.

I also didn't see a power setting in the log. Have you tried changing it to full again?

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I added the GPU slot at some point, and then deleted it. Anyway I think solved it, it was a case of a shortcut mix-up. I believe I was opening FAHControl.exe and that's why it wouldn't start folding. Sorted it out now, sorry for the confusion.

I'm having a similar problem, perhaps my log can be helpful? This is on a HD7950 with a moderate overclock. It does not appear to even be starting to fold though, so stability of the overclock isn't an issue (yet).

Interestingly, it appears to load the CPU portion normally (ie I have 25% CPU utilization going to FahCore_16.exe), but there is no load on the graphics card and project makes no progress.
