Mixed matched GPUs not working anymore

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Mixed matched GPUs not working anymore

My V7 7.1.52 client isn't working properly. Not sure what happened, woke up one morning to notice my machine had stopped folding properly. Tried updating driver AFTER this issue had been observed and since I have rolled back every graphics driver on the machine to try to see if that would fix it, it has not (I swept all registry entries in between driver changes to be sure). Not too long ago (aprox. 1.5 months ago) I installed a Geforce GTX 470 into my machine and had it running smoothly with a Radeon HD 6990, both folding for the greater part of the day. About a week ago the GTX 470 started downclocking to about half speed after around 2-3 hours of folding, not sure why. Now the system no longer downclocks the card but it doesn't use the full GTX 470 ( I can see the GPU load through GPU-Z is at around 60%-80%) along with it not utilizing the 6990 at all. The projects for the AMD card just sit in the cue and all status displays show them as running even though I can see the GPU load is nothing and no progress on the projects is made. Tried manually assigning GPU slots in the configure tab, tried manually assigning opencl and cuda in the slots edit tab, nothing seems to fix this. Have tried re-installing and wiping the Folding@Home client multiple times, no luck. I have reached my limit of expertise on this, what to do now?

Perhaps I'm missing something but at the end of your log all three slots are progressing though not particularly quickly.

There are a couple of Nvidia projects that do not use that GPU at 100%, maybe you got one. However, that does not explain the ATI GPU's failing too.

The GTX470 downclocking is a sign that the drivers detected a problem and did a video reset. The cause is non-specific but a couple of common potential causes is an excessive OC or gaming while folding.

I do not see anything wrong in your config. That being said, I have no way to determine if the manual setting of OpenCL and Cuda are valid. Whenever drivers are replaced or updated the order of the cards may change.

If it isn't working my suggestion is to start with only one slot and see if you can get it to work all by itself. Once that is working add a second and limit your fiddling with that and only add the 3rd when the previous two are working properly. The point is to use the KISS principal.

Your configuration doesn't make sense to me. (That may be because of my ignorance because I don't run multiple GPUs). Shouldn't opencl-index be set to 0 and 1 if you have two ATI cards that are identified as GPU 0 and GPU 1?

Tried deleting all but one GPU slot and restarted the Client. I am happy to say it is now folding on the GPU slot according to the Client, however GPU activity is still zero and it would seem that one of my CPUs is strangely maxing out its usage. I can report that it says I'll get 228 PPD from that one slot. When folding properly I usually get about 8500-9000 PPD off of the AMD GPU slots each. As to the driver resets on the GTX 470 I haven't overclocked it and it isn't hooked up to a monitor so it can't be utilized during gaming (it also is not currently set up to run physx). Still stumped.

I deleted all work units along with all old data when I reinstalled the Client just a short while ago. Same results sadly. I also wiped all registry entries of the program before installation and made sure all directories of previous install were deleted as well.

Which of your GPUs show zero activity?

The ATI GPU will use 100% of one of your CPUs. Eventually you'll have to choose between folding with SMP:5 and the ATI GPU or with SMP:6 without that GPU. (That shouldn't be a problem for the NV GPUs.)

If you deleted the slots and re-added them, you'll need to post the new configuration. My question (above) only applies to the information I quoted in my post, but I didn't get an answer.

The ATI GPU slots do in fact use about one full CPU, true. I do not fold with SMP so this is not a problem for me. The ATI GPUs are the two of the three GPUs in my system that show no activity. I have now been able to get one of the GPU slots to fold, only the Nvidia one and only if it is the only one in the cue. If I add more GPU slots to be folded something even stranger is now happening. I assign a new GPU slot to fold on GPU ID "00" or "01", both of these slots are populated by the HD 6990 GPUs, however when they are given a project to work on the 6990 shows no activity as it did before, BUT now the Nvidia GPU starts to work on those new projects asigned to slot "00" and/or "01" despite the fact that the Nvidia GPU is in slot "02". I know this may further complicate things but that's what's coming up in the client. I will post a log as configured without the ATI GPUs slots populated and then one with so you can see what I mean. The Nvidia GPU if given the work of the other GPU slots to fold will have its GPU load go down to 70%-80% (instead of 99.9% when operating on only one folding slot) as well the CPU load jumps up to almost 3 CPUs being fully maximized if more GPU slots are added beyond just the Nvidia slot even if the Nvidia card is the one working on them.

The previous log showed an aprox 5:36 frame time for a p11293 worth 1835 points. Manually calculating PPD from that data produces 4700 PPD. Certainly not 8500-9000 but also absolutely not 228. I think you are using FAHControl's EST PPD and that can be rather inaccurate especially early, or interrupted. See: https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/F ... ticket/888. You might try downloading HFM.net as a relatively accurate method of monitoring PPD.

Ideally, the folding client will detect the cards and the slots correctly. Unfortunately that is not always the case with multiple cards. In Windows, the order of the cards software based and can and do change whenever the drivers have been touched such as updating them or reverting them. This is a significant annoyance in any system with multiple cards especially multi-vender. You can not assume that the card in the MB slot 1 will be the same card as in folding slot 1 or even that the card that used to be in folding slot 1 will be the same card in folding slot 1 after the drivers have been touched. That being said, if you add a slot one at a time, you can tell which card that new slot belongs to and adjust gpu-index accordingly.

The opencl-index and cuda-index are used if the folding client gets confused as to which cards are Cuda (Nvidia) and which are OpenCL (ATI). If the cards are getting the appropriate projects, auto (-1) is ideal. The manual settings will always start at 0 and increment for each new appropriate card. For your example the Nvidia card slot would have a cuda-index of 0, and the ATI slots would have opencl-index of 0 and 1 respectively.

If the slot is running but the %GPU usage is low then something other than folding configuration is interfering with the operation of the GPU. There are two reasons that I have seen. The first is that there are a few Nvidia projects that run slow giving poor PPD and run the GPU at less than 100%. The only explanation that anyone has concluded for those projects is that of PCI-E bus lag. I have heard of no one solving that specific problem, only suffering because of it. The second poor %GPU usage tends to be where there is not a full CPU core being allocated to each ATI slot.

P.S. The %CPU for Nvidia cards does not always stay at 0. As long as there are no other issues, I would not be too concerned. The highest I've seen it was 45% on a P4. Right now on my personal system I have a WU (p8044) at 98% complete and it is busy running at 6%-10% (i.e. a full core) on a q6600 but the PPD is staying normal. I have no doubt it will drop to normal shortly when the WU finishes. If it doesn't revert back to normal, I can always restart FAHControl which will close it all down and restart all the cores (At 3% I quit FAHControl and then restarted it and once finished restarting the core was back to a normal 0%).

I don't know if you will find the above useful or even understandable. So ask more questions if you need.

Problem fixed! It would seem that if you have a hardware setup such as mine and have CCC 12.9 beta w/.NET 4.0 support installed and THEN install Nvidia drivers 306.97 AND select clean install (this seems to be the key with this version of the drivers only) during installation the new Geforce drivers override any setting you might have with your prior AMD GPU folding, to the extent of attempting to work on any/all AMD GPU folding slots along with their own respective cues. If this installation series plays out you must uninstall your Nvidia drivers completely along with F@H folding client and then reinstall them only after your AMD GPU slots are up and working, then and only then can you install the Nvidia drivers to have both sets of GPUs fold simultaneously. At least for me.
